Trying to get another blog post written can feel overwhelming – especially when you’re pressed for time and need to maintain the high quality your readers expect. The challenge of consistently creating engaging, SEO-friendly content can lead to writer’s block and even burnout. Fortunately, there are tools and tech that can help you significantly streamline your writing process. And they can help you write your blog posts faster and better.

Ready to transform your blog writing into a more productive and enjoyable experience?

1. Automate Keyword Research and Topic Generation

The foundation of any great blog post is it matters to your target market and what they’re currently interested in or searching for. Traditional keyword research can be time-consuming, often involving sifting through endless data to find the perfect keywords. (I know because I’ve done a lot of it over the years.)

Luckily, tools like SEMrush and Ahrefs can help you analyze search engine data and provide comprehensive keyword insights. They can quickly identify high-volume keywords, assess keyword difficulty, and even suggest related terms you might not have considered or even thought of. When you integrate these capabilities into your blogging toolkit, you can make sure your content’s keyword aligns with current search trends and ranks well on search engines.

SEMrush is what I’m using these days. It offers a Keyword Magic Tool that sorts thousands of keywords in seconds and shows you what terms are being searched and their competition level. Using this feature can help you pinpoint the most effective keywords to use based on actual data, saving you lots of time and enhancing your blog’s SEO performance.

Another type of information that can speed up blogging is online trending topics.

Platforms like BuzzSumo can analyze what’s currently popular in your niche and suggest blog topics likely to engage your target audience. This can significantly speed up your brainstorming process and make sure the content you create is relevant and likely to attract readers.

If you’re up for trying out a few of these ideas, all the tools I’ve mentioned have free trials. See for yourself how you might speed up your writing and create more captivating blogs for your audience. In my opinion, if you’re proactive like this you skip guessing what your audience might like to read and can deliver content you know they’re interested in.

2. Use AI Writing Assistants to Overcome Writer’s Block

Let’s face it, everyone who blogs faces writer’s block every now and again. And as we all know by now, AI can help out a lot here. I like to start using tools like ChatGPT and Claude as soon as I decide on my keyword. It helps me keep the momentum going wherever I happen to feel stuck in my process and maintain consistent blog output.

AI writing assistants like ChatGPT or Jasper can generate content ideas and outlines based on a few input keywords or a general topic. These tools use advanced algorithms to produce relevant and engaging content suggestions that can serve as a foundation for your posts.

For example, if you’re struggling to come up with a new post, you could input “tips for beginner bloggers” into an AI tool. The AI would then provide several angles you might explore, such as “Essential SEO Tips for New Bloggers” or “How to Design Your First Blog Layout.” These prompts can help jumpstart your writing process and keep the ideas flowing.

And we all know, AI writing assistants can also help draft actual content. They can write introductory paragraphs, create engaging headings, or suggest conclusions that summarize key points.

But you have to keep in mind that just because they can write your entire blog for you, it doesn’t mean you should let them.

None of the writing assistants are anywhere near as creative as a human. So, you’ll need to be sure to heavily edit their output to make sure it still reads like you wrote your blog.

Some people are still a little leery of using these tools. If that sounds like you, don’t worry. You can start off slowly. Think of it as dipping your toe in the water to just check things out.

ChatGPT is pretty easy to use, and they have a free version. You can use it to do a little brainstorming to see what you think of it. For example, I recently showed a colleague how to use it to generate some pretty great ideas for his wife’s unique Mother’s Day gifts.

If you find it intriguing, you might try it to brainstorm writing ideas or outline a blog post the next time you’re feeling stuck.

3. Optimize Your Writing Environment with Technology

I do my best writing in the morning and when I can work without distractions. A woman I used to work with swore she wrote best in the evening when she had a candle flickering next to her bed as she sat there and content on her laptop. (A flickering candle would be WAAAYYY too distracting for me – not to mention the allure of my pillows and imagining stretching out on my bed after waking up at 5 AM!)

Every writer is more productive when they’re working in an environment that’s optimized for them.

And it’s the “for them” that’s important. Creating an optimized space for writing is about the physical and digital spaces you work in. Technology, especially when integrated thoughtfully, can make a huge difference in how quickly and comfortably you produce blog posts.

Two of the most popular platforms for creating blog posts are Google Docs and Microsoft Word. They’re excellent for bloggers because of their simplicity, accessibility, and powerful features. They can both offer real-time saving and syncing across devices. So, you can start a post on your desktop and finish it on your mobile device.

And if you haven’t checked out their dictation features yet, you should. You might be able to dramatically speed up the writing process if you prefer speaking to typing. Or you just need a break from typing for a bit.

Have you heard of Cold Turkey Writer or Freedom?

They’re distraction-free writing apps that can significantly enhance your productivity by blocking out distractions. They temporarily restrict access to certain apps and websites, so you can focus on your writing.

For instance, you can set Cold Turkey Writer to lock down everything on your computer except the text editor, forcing you to concentrate until you’ve met a word count or writing time you preset. This can be incredibly effective for completing first drafts or meeting tight deadlines.

Another trick you might try is just blocking the time to write out on your calendar. This works well for me because I’ve discovered that if it’s not on my calendar, it probably won’t get done.

4. Use Blog Post Templates and Structured Outlines

One of the most effective ways to speed up the blog writing process is by giving yourself some structure. Templates and outlines can help you maintain a consistent format, ensure all critical components are included, and significantly reduce the time you spend writing each post.

A blog post template is a pre-defined structure for your articles.

Of course, you can customize your template according to the topic but by generally following the same format, you know what you need to create. This means you spend less time figuring out how to organize your content and more time on the actual writing and research.

Let’s say a typical blog post template has sections for the introduction, key points with subheadings, a conclusion, and a call to action. With this template, you can put your ideas into the appropriate sections without building the structure from scratch each time.

You might want to consider creating templates for each type of blog post you typically write – a “how-to”, a numbered list, a rant, a story, etc.

A structured outline is a detailed guide for what you’ll include in each section of the post.

I like to use outlines because they help me to see the blog post and check its flow before I start writing. I definitely write faster and hit far fewer bumps in my writing when I use an outline.

You can think of your outline as a roadmap that reduces the typical pauses in writing for you to think about what comes next. It also gives you a chance to make sure you cover all the necessary information.

When you use a template and an outline together, that’s when you can really begin to write blogs faster. When you’re ready to begin writing a new blog, you can use your template to create a specific outline for the post. As you do your preliminary research and/or brainstorming, you can fill in the main points you want to cover.

If you’re a structured kind of writer, this process can really help with your article’s coherence and logical flow.

These tools help me to write efficiently. I use them to organize my thoughts and ideas and make sure that each post has a better shot of being clear and complete.

5. Continuously Learn and Adapt Your Writing with Analytics

Being able to write faster is just step one. The next is to make your blog posts better. So, you’ve got to understand how your content performs and use that data to make informed decisions for future posts. This is where analytics can provide deeper insights into your blog’s performance, helping you to track which posts are most successful and understand why.

Tools like Google Analytics can analyze reader behavior and monitor site traffic on your blog. The metrics these tools provide include things like page views, average time on page, and bounce rates. Each of these is critical for understanding engagement. (More advanced tools can even segment your audience based on behavior, predicting which topics will be more engaging based on historical data.)

When you regularly review your analytics, you can identify patterns and trends that should guide your content creation.

For example, if you notice that posts about “relaxation tips” have higher engagement and share rates, you might decide to focus more on creating content in this area.

Here’s an interesting tool you might find useful – MarketMuse. It can help you identify gaps in your content when compared to other blogs on the same topic. It can also help by suggesting related topics you’ve not fully explored yet on your site. MarketMuse and similar tools can help you stay relevant to your audience’s evolving interests – i.e., continue to create better blogs than your competitors.

As with everything online, the key to success is continuous testing and iteration. A/B testing can help you tweak your headlines, formats, and content styles to see what works best. Blogs aren’t simply a once-and-done method of marketing. They need to evolve to continue to stay relevant.

I recommend reviewing your content monthly to see how things are shifting with reader behavior and traffic. This little bit of data can help you identify which of your blog posts are ready to be fine-tuned so they can perform better.

Overall, the path to writing blog posts faster and better requires you to automate or systematize mundane tasks, track your analytics, and optimize your writing environment. When you dial these in for yourself, crafting your blogs will become significantly simpler.

As a healing, helping, or wellness professional, your mission goes well beyond just offering services. It’s about transforming lives, fostering growth, and igniting hope. But there’s a marketing challenge you, like many others, face: crafting high-quality content that genuinely resonates. It’s one thing to have a wealth of knowledge and a heart full of passion. It’s another to communicate that effectively to those who need it most.

The reason most have difficulty creating compelling content is they’ve not answered the fundamental question: How to identify your target audience in writing? Fully answering this question is pivotal. By focusing on your specific audience, you don’t merely make writing more straightforward; you ensure that your content attracts those seeking guidance in their wellness journey.

For healing and wellness professionals, the connection with the audience isn’t just a marketing strategy. It’s an extension of the care you provide. So, you must understand and connect with those individuals who stand to benefit most from your expertise.

What is a Target Audience?

Let’s make sure we’re all on the same page by starting off with a definition. You can think of your target market as your tribe – those special people who, when they hear what you have to say, nod their heads thinking, “This speaks to me.” They’re not just anybody; they’re the ones whose lives light up with the solutions you offer.

Now, if you’re in the healing, helping, and wellness space, this gets a touch more magical. Your target audience isn’t just browsing for the next fancy product. They’re searching for a solution, a guide, maybe even a transformation. When you truly write and create content that speaks directly to these people, they won’t just skim or scroll past your content. Instead, they’ll feel it, embrace it, and choose to follow (and potentially work with you) on their journey of well-being.

Now, if you’ve been doing any other reading or research on “target audience”, you’ve probably run across a lot of other terms. Content marketing, like most niches, has its jargon. What can make it confusing is that there are multiple terms that all mean about the same thing. Some of the terms you may have run across include “ideal clients”, “core demographic”, “user persona”, and “target market”.

I think of it like this, a target audience by any other name is still just a target market. In other words, don’t be confused by the jargon.

Why Do You Need a Target Audience?

If you’re tired of writing and publishing or posting marketing content that goes largely ignored, you know at a gut level why you need a target audience. To create content that resonates, you need to deeply understand your target market. And when you don’t focus on them during the writing process, your content marketing will fall flat.

Imagine you’re a top-notch physiotherapist. You’ve crafted a brilliant piece on spinal health. However, the only eyes it’s getting on social media are those of teenagers looking for fitness tips. They’ll scroll past, not because your content isn’t gold, but simply because it’s not what they’re interested in.

You already know that every individual walking into your clinic, yoga studio, or therapy session is unique.

They’ve got their own stories, dreams, and maybe even a couple of dragons to slay. When you know your target audience, you can tailor your marketing messages to resonate with their personal tales, making them feel seen and understood.

We all know time is our most precious resource. So, instead of casting a wide net and hoping for the best, focusing on your target audience is like picking the ripest fruit from the tree. It streamlines your efforts, saving you time and energy, and supercharges your growth trajectory.

When your message consistently resonates with a particular group, they don’t just consume your content. They become advocates, cheerleaders, and loyal supporters. It’s not just about securing a client or patient. That won’t assist you in having the impact you want to have on people’s lives. Instead, it’s about building a community that cherishes and champions your expertise.

In other words, by taking the time to identify your target audience BEFORE you, or your team, begins writing any marketing materials you’ll be better positioned to get the attention of your audience, craft personal connections, make your writing easier and better, and build a loyal community.

5 Steps to Identify Your Target Audience

Now that you understand the driving forces for identifying your target audience before writing another piece of content, it’s time to start putting together the information you need to describe them.

1. Dive Deep with Demographics

Demographics are the basic details about your audience like age, gender, location, occupation, and income. Knowing these can shape how you tailor your content.

There are 3 basic ways in which you can gather this information.

Surveys & Feedback Forms
Use tools like SurveyMonkey or Google Forms to capture information directly from your audience. Offer incentives for completion to boost response rates.

Website Analytics
Platforms like Google Analytics can provide insights about your website visitors. Monitor these for patterns in demographic data.

Direct Conversations
Encourage open discussions during consultations or workshops. These insights can often capture nuances analytics might miss.

2. Understand Psychographics

Psychographics describe your target audience’s personality, habits, hobbies, values, and more. You can get a better understanding of your audience’s psychographics by engagement analysis and direct feedback.

Engagement analysis is looking at which posts or topics get the most interaction on your website and social media channels. If you’ve got a podcast or a YouTube channel, they can also provide a wealth of engagement information. When you know what gets the most attention, you have more information about your audience’s preferences and values.

You can get feedback from your patients or clients in various ways. You might have them complete a feedback form after a service, ask for their comments on your content, ask for a review, or have the individual who checks them out ask specific questions to elicit feedback. Whichever format you choose, the goal is to have your clients or patients voice their opinions and feelings about your services and/or content.

3. Identify Their Challenges

This may seem overly simplistic, but you’d be amazed at how many practices don’t explicitly know what the primary problems their clients/patients look to them to solve.

As a wellness professional, you’re in the business of solving problems. It’s imperative that you know exactly what your target audience struggles with so that whatever you choose to write acknowledges their struggle.

A few ways you can gather this information are client interviews, reviewing past clients, and online forums. I find that most practices I work with are inclined to think they already know the top challenges their patients face. However, if their writing isn’t resonating with their target audience, then I’m suspicious that they don’t know it in as much detail as they could.

Most find it eye-opening to actually work through the process because they suddenly understand how their target audience actually talks about their problems.

4. Listen to Feedback

Constructive criticism can also help refine your content and better understand your target audience. Again, this is fairly easy to do.

You can use feedback tools on your website or in the delivery of your services that allow easy feedback submission.

You can also keep an eye on review sites relevant to your profession to understand the concerns and kudos clients might have.

5. Examine Current Clientele

Your current clients can offer insights into the larger audience you can attract. By periodically surveying your clientele, you can identify why they chose you and what they hope to achieve. You can also ask about the content pieces you’ve written that are most engaging to your current clients.

Crafting a Comprehensive Target Audience Description

Once you’ve gathered all the necessary information and insights about your target audience, it’s time to put them together in a coherent and detailed description. Which is really easy for me to say and could leave you with some big questions. To help make sure you understand what your target audience description could look like, let’s go through an example.

A comprehensive target audience description doesn’t just list the facts. It paints a vivid picture of a specific individual or group of individuals who are the prime beneficiaries of your content and services.

Here’s a sample structure of a target audience description:

Demographic Details

Start with the basics. This includes age, gender, location, occupation, and possibly income bracket.

Example: “Females, aged 30-40, based in urban areas, working in mid-level corporate roles, with an annual income of $50k-$70k.”

Psychographic Insights

Dive into their mindset. Their habits, hobbies, values, and even their fears and aspirations.

Example: “Values holistic wellness, frequently attends yoga classes, seeks balance in life and work, and is concerned about long-term health.”

Challenges & Pain Points

What problems are they facing that your content or services can address?

Example: “Struggles with chronic stress, has difficulty in finding time for self-care, seeks guidance on natural healing techniques.”

Goals & Aspirations

What are they hoping to achieve?

Example: “Aims to find more balance in daily life, wishes to adopt a more natural lifestyle, wants to reduce reliance on medications.”

Content Preferences

How do they consume content? Do they prefer videos, blogs, podcasts, or eBooks?

Example: “Prefers reading informative blog posts, follows wellness influencers on Instagram, and occasionally listens to health podcasts.”

Putting this all together, your target audience description might read something like this:

“Females in their 30s, based in urban environments and working in corporate roles. They value holistic wellness, regularly engage in activities like yoga, and seek a work-life balance. They face challenges like chronic stress and a lack of time for self-care, but they aspire to live more naturally and reduce their reliance on medications. In terms of content, they are avid blog readers and follow wellness influencers on social platforms.”

Having such a detailed and vivid description empowers you to craft content that speaks directly to their needs, aspirations, and preferences. It’s like having a conversation with a friend: the more you know about them, the more meaningful and relevant your discussions become.

The Power of a Singular Persona

Many professionals, especially in the content marketing realm, find immense value in creating a singular, detailed persona to represent their broader target audience. Think of this persona as an embodiment of your typical client or reader. By personifying the collective attributes, challenges, and aspirations of your audience into one “character”, you can achieve a sharper focus in your content creation.

Imagine writing or crafting content for a friend. You know their likes, dislikes, challenges, and aspirations. This intimate knowledge allows for deeper, more tailored communication.

The same applies to content. By picturing this singular persona — let’s call her “Wellness Wendy” — you have a clear image of who you’re speaking to.

Wellness Wendy

Name: Wendy Williams

Age: 34

Demographics:

Location: Lives in a bustling urban environment, within a downtown apartment complex.

Occupation: Corporate role as a Senior Marketing Manager at a reputable tech company.

Income: Approximately $68K annually.

Background: Wendy graduated with a degree in business management and swiftly climbed the corporate ladder. She’s been with her current company for over a decade, earning respect and a comfortable living.

Psychographic Insights:

Hobbies & Interests: Wendy has been practicing yoga for five years and often attends weekend retreats to rejuvenate. She enjoys cooking with organic ingredients and often experiments with vegan recipes.

Values: She’s a strong advocate for holistic wellness, believing that the mind, body, and spirit are deeply interconnected. Wendy is also eco-conscious, supporting sustainable brands and products.

Challenges:

The hustle of corporate life, deadlines, and managing her team often results in chronic stress.

Wendy grapples with carving out time for herself amidst work and social commitments.

She’s started to experience mild anxiety, prompting her to explore natural remedies over medications.

Goals & Aspirations:

Wendy’s primary goal is to achieve a harmonious work-life balance.

She’s keen on reducing her stress levels and aspires to incorporate more holistic wellness practices into her routine.

Eventually, Wendy dreams of taking a sabbatical to travel and join a wellness retreat overseas.

Content Preferences:

Wendy starts her day scrolling through her favorite wellness blogs and catching up on new posts. She’s a regular follower of several influencers on Instagram, often turning to them for inspiration, product recommendations, and wellness tips.

Podcasts have recently piqued her interest, especially those discussing mindfulness, yoga, and holistic health.

Then, when you draft content, you’re addressing Wendy’s concerns, answering her questions, and providing solutions to her challenges. This technique ensures that even though you’re writing for many, your content feels personal and directly relevant to each person who consumes it.

Furthermore, having a clearly defined persona like “Wellness Wendy” can streamline content planning, ensuring consistency in tone, style, and relevance. Every time you’re in doubt, simply ask, “What would Wendy want to know?” or “How can I help Wendy with this issue?” This approach not only humanizes your audience but also makes the content creation process more intuitive and empathetic.

After you’ve created your target audience description and singular persona, you’ve got a great foundation for writing and creating content. However, understanding your audience isn’t a one-and-done exercise. It’s an evolving journey.

As the wellness landscape continues to shift, so will the needs and desires of those seeking your expertise. So, you’ll want to periodically revisit how you’ve identified your target audience and make appropriate tweaks to ensure your writing and content remain relevant.

Illustrating the Impact of Target Audiences on Writing

Now, let’s take a peek at some examples that can help you see the profound impact different target audiences can have on writing.

First, imagine you offer a holistic approach to mental wellness through both talk therapy and yoga meditation.

Let’s see how this business might approach blog titles for two different target audiences.

Title for Busy Corporate Professionals:

“Stress-Busting Yoga: The 15-Minute Office Routine for a Clearer Mind”

This title recognizes the time constraints and high-stress environments of corporate professionals. It offers a quick and efficient solution they can integrate into their tight schedules.

Title for Parents of Teenagers:

“Bridging Gaps with Yoga: Finding Common Ground with Your Teen through Meditation”

Here, the emphasis shifts to using yoga as a tool for bonding and understanding, acknowledging the challenges parents might face in connecting with their adolescent children.

The difference between the titles for the two target audiences is profound.

Now let’s see how this business might approach social media posts about a mindfulness workshop for two different target audiences.

Post for Senior Citizens:

“Remember the calm of yesteryears? Dive into our Mindfulness Workshop and rediscover that serenity. Perfectly tailored for our golden generation, let’s embrace peace together.”

This post pulls at the nostalgia strings, making it relatable for seniors by reminding them of the tranquility of the past.

Post for College Students during Exam Season:

“Drowning in exam stress? Breathe. Join our Mindfulness Workshop and find your focus. Ace those papers with a calm mind!”

This post recognizes the immense pressure students face during exams, offering them a potential solution to better focus and perform.

The thing I really want you to notice is that the workshop is the same. It’s just the target audience that makes the message so very different.

Learning to craft content for a specific target audience can transform the effectiveness of your message. It’s not just about what you’re saying or writing, but also how and to whom you’re saying it.

Hopefully, now you have a much greater appreciation of how vital it is to identify your target audience and have the skills to begin creating your first target audience description to make your content creation and writing easier.

One of the concerns my clients often have when we go through this process is losing potential business by being too narrow in their description. What I explain to them is that although it might seem that you’re narrowing down your potential audience, it’s really about leveling up your communication so that you stand out for your unique understanding of your audience’s problems and your unique way of helping them resolve those problems.

Need a little or a lot of help identifying your target audience? We can help. The first step is to schedule a consultation with one of our content marketing experts.

The world of health and wellness is a competitive one. As a professional in this field, you’ve worked tirelessly to establish a successful practice. Now, you’re ready to extend that success to the digital landscape. Your key to unlocking online growth? Search Engine Optimization (SEO). And the key to SEO is our quick and easy SEO checklist for blog posts. It will help you drive more organic traffic to your site and, in turn, expand your practice – just as it’s done for our clients.

Understanding SEO and Why It Matters

Consider SEO as the process of optimizing your online practice. Just as you’ve ensured your physical practice is easily accessible and inviting to clients, your digital presence needs the same strategic attention.

SEO involves improving the visibility of your website in search engine results, attracting more organic traffic, boosting click-through rates, and driving client conversion. This process can seem daunting, but with the right approach, you can harness its power and significantly elevate your online presence.

Your Quick & Easy SEO Checklist for Blog Posts

Before diving into the specifics of the checklist, I want to review some basic information for understanding SEO.

Keyword Research

Keyword research is akin to understanding the unique needs and wants of your patients. It’s about discovering what phrases and queries your potential clients are typing into search engines when looking for the services you offer.

Here are some key factors to consider:

Search Intent
This refers to the reason behind a person’s search query. Are they looking for information (informational intent), intending to visit a specific website (navigational intent), or planning to make a purchase (transactional intent)? Understanding search intent can help you better tailor your content to meet users’ needs.

Relevance
Your target keyword should align with the content you’re producing and the services you provide. Irrelevant keywords may bring traffic but are unlikely to convert visitors into clients.

Search Volume
This is the number of searches a particular keyword receives over a specific period. High search volume indicates that a keyword is frequently searched, which could translate into more potential traffic.

Competition
Keywords with low competition are those that not many websites are trying to rank for. Ranking for these keywords can be easier than trying to rank for highly competitive keywords.

Finding the right keyword isn’t always easy. SEO tools like SEMrush, Majestic, and Ahrefs can provide valuable insights into keyword search volume and competition.

(You can learn more in our comprehensive article about how SEO marketing works.)

Now that we’ve laid the groundwork for understanding keywords, let’s dive into the specifics of our SEO checklist for optimizing your blog posts.

Your keyword phrase needs to be in your blog’s title.

This is the first thing that a reader sees. It not only sets the tone of your article but also helps search engines understand what your content is about.

For example, if your keyword phrase is “holistic health tips”, a title could be “10 Effective Holistic Health Tips for a Balanced Lifestyle”.

The keyword phrase should appear approximately once every 100-150 words.

This ensures that your content is thoroughly centered around the topic. This effort helps search engines in determining your blog’s relevance to user queries.

However, you’ll avoid keyword stuffing which is essentially using your keyword too much. It could lead to penalties as search engines see it as a spammy tactic.

Instead, you’ll want to maintain a natural flow in your writing as you incorporate your keyword phrase.

Your keyword phrase appears in approximately 50% of the headings.

Headings break your content into digestible sections. Including your keyword phrase in some of your headings helps to emphasize your topic’s relevance which enhances your SEO.

Use the keyword phrase in the blog’s URL.

URLs are one of the first elements that search engines crawl. Having your keyword phrase in the URL can help signal the page’s content and improve its chances of ranking higher.

Work your keyword phrase into your blog’s meta description and the page title.

The meta description and page title are displayed in search engine results pages (SERPs). They give potential readers a snapshot of what your blog post is about and can influence click-through rates.

Especially when you’re starting out, you’ll want to make sure your blog has internal and external links.

Linking to your own content (internal links) and reputable sources (external links) not only provides more value to your readers but also boosts your SEO.

Internal links help search engines understand the structure of your website and the relationship between various topics you cover.

External links help search engines to know that you’re not just creating content, but that you’re aware of best practices and general industry knowledge. This enhances your content’s trustworthiness from the search engine’s POV.

Ensure the keyword phrase is unique to the blog you’re writing.

Optimizing multiple posts for the same keyword could result in keyword cannibalization – a situation where your own posts compete against each other in search results.

Your blog should be at least 500 words long, preferably longer.

Longer, comprehensive posts are seen as more valuable to readers, leading to better ranking. However, the length really depends upon the topic.

For example, I could have just dumped the SEO checklist for blog posts that I use into this blog. It would have been less than 500 words long. However, it would have only made sense to my clients who are familiar with my shortcut explanations. But, that’s not who I’m writing this blog post for.

I want you and every other reader to feel that you have the knowledge you need to use the checklist, so I’m going into much more detail. The result? A much longer blog post.

Use alt-tags on images containing the keyword phrase.

Alt-tags help search engines understand what an image is about. They also improve accessibility for visually impaired readers using screen readers.

Avoid passive voice. The bulk of sentences are 20 words or less.

These practices improve readability, leading to a better user experience. And user experience is one part of how search engines evaluate the quality of a blog post.

Use subheadings every 250-300 words and keep paragraphs short.

These make your content easy to scan and read which is another way you can improve the reader’s experience.

Create a well-written blog to engage your intended readers.

Quality content keeps readers engaged, reduces bounce rates, and increases the chances of social shares, all of which can positively impact SEO.

One of the mistakes I most often see people make when writing blogs is using too much passive tense. Using a predominantly active voice keeps readers engaged.

Your blog contains a call to action or CTA.

Directly inviting readers to take action can increase engagement and conversions. Your CTA might be an invitation to join your mailing list, inviting comments, or even a request to share your blog on social media.

The Power of Social Media in SEO

While social media signals are not a direct ranking factor for search engines, there’s an undeniable relationship between social shares and visibility in SERPs. So, how does social media aid your SEO efforts? Let’s take a closer look.

Amplifying Your Content

The purpose of your top-notch content is to be seen, read, and shared by as many people as possible. Sharing your blog posts on your social media platforms puts your content in front of a larger audience. The more your content is shared, the more likely it is to be seen by others who might link to it in their own content, indirectly benefiting your backlink profile.

A backlink is when another website links to your website. Both the number and quality of backlinks your site has are ranking factors for the SERPs.

Enhancing Brand Recognition

Consistent social media activity helps boost your brand recognition, making users more likely to search for your content. Increased branded searches can indirectly influence rankings.

Building an Engaged Community

An active and engaged social media community can amplify your content reach and provide invaluable feedback. Engaged followers are more likely to like and share your content, which can contribute to improving your organic traffic.

Driving Traffic to Your Site

Every link to your blog that you share on social media is a potential stream of inbound traffic. The more diverse sources of traffic you have, the less reliant you are on any one of them.

Social Media Profiles Rank in Search Engines

Lastly, your social media profiles also appear in SERPs. So, keeping an active profile can help you occupy more digital real estate in the search results.

Remember, the key to a successful social media strategy, much like SEO, lies in providing value. Regularly post useful content, engage with your followers, and promote your blog posts to leverage the power of social media in boosting your SEO.

Real-life SEO Success Stories

Witnessing SEO in action through case studies can provide more practical insights and boost your confidence in implementing these strategies. Let’s explore a few compelling examples:

My Path to Success

When I launched my first website (a divorce coaching site), it attracted a modest number of visitors each month – 236. However, through consistent blogging using the SEO checklist in just ten months, I saw the site’s monthly visits grow to 5,000, and by the end of 18 months, it reached nearly 1,000 visitors a day. That’s a 12,000% increase in site visitors in just over 2½ years!

The search engines, recognizing the quality and relevance of my site to visitors, began assigning more and more keywords to my web pages and blog posts. As a result, more people found that site. Thanks to a strong SEO strategy and powerful content marketing, my gross revenue with that business increased by 300% in just 18 months!

A Content Creator’s SEO Awakening

In our second case study, a content creator started blogging consistently in the first nine months of his business but saw little website traffic. Recognizing the need for improved SEO, he asked me to create and content marketing and SEO strategy for him.

He followed the strategy I created and Following a detailed SEO and content plan, he was astounded to see his traffic double within a few months. His organic traffic increased 10x over 12 months, with SEO becoming the biggest driver of traffic to his website, accounting for 55-65% of his traffic.

Inconsistent Blogging, Consistent Growth

Finally, let’s consider a client who had us create an SEO and content strategy for her, but blogged inconsistently, seemingly flouting the conventional wisdom of maintaining a consistent publishing schedule. Nonetheless, her organic traffic grew 5750% in 18 months! With opt-ins and a thriving list of 506 subscribers, she laid a solid foundation for offering products to her website visitors.

I know that at first glance, SEO can seem daunting. But it doesn’t have to be. When you understand search intent, focus on keyword relevancy, and implement SEO best practices, you can significantly improve your blog’s organic reach. Remember, consistency is key, and the results will not be instantaneous but gradual and, more importantly, sustainable.

Although I would love for you to bookmark this blog to keep this SEO checklist for blogs handy, you now know the basics and I can share with you the abbreviated version I share with all of my clients. You can make a copy of it here.

Once you consistently hit all the right points each time you create content, you’ll be well on your way to seeing an increase in organic traffic, just like I did and our clients do.

If you’d like to learn about how we can support you with your SEO and content marketing strategy, schedule a conversation with one of our SEO experts.

Now that AI is on the scene, the pace of content creation, especially blogs, is increasing exponentially. However, fast doesn’t always mean good. That’s why you still need to have a content marketing strategy that helps you create content your clients or patients want to consume AND a content repurposing workflow that allows you to get greater ROI on your content.

By repurposing your content across various formats and marketing channels, you can extend its reach, engage new audiences, and drive more traffic to your practice’s website. So let’s explore a content repurposing workflow that can significantly boost your ROI and help you make the most of your valuable content assets.

The Real Value of Content Repurposing

Creating high-quality content takes time, effort, and resources. However, if that content’s limited to a single format or platform, its reach and impact will be limited too. That’s where content repurposing comes in. By repurposing your content, you can maximize its impact. The key benefits of content repurposing include:

Expanded Reach and Audience Engagement
When you repurpose your blog, video, podcast, and even social media content into different formats, you increase its visibility across various channels. This broader reach means you can connect with more of your ideal clients/patients based on their preferences for consuming content. By catering to their preferred formats, it’s easier to engage them which increases your chances of conversion.

For example, imagine you’re a holistic medical doctor and you have a weekly live stream. Each week you have an hour-long conversation with a guest. If you get the live stream transcribed, you can feed the transcription to ChatGPT and ask it to come up with at least 3 different blog titles. Then you can ask it to write each of the blogs using the transcript as reference material. Then you can ask it to come up with a series of social media posts for each of the blogs. Of course, you’ll want to edit whatever it is that ChatGPT comes up with, but that’s LOTS easier than having to come up with everything on your own.

Hopefully, you’re beginning to see how easy it can be to repurpose content.

Increased Search Engine Visibility
You’ve probably heard this from me before, but search engines love fresh and relevant content. When you repurpose your existing content, you provide search engines with more signals of relevance which can increase your visibility in search results. Plus, repurposing gives you an opportunity to target specific keywords and optimize each piece of content for search engine rankings, boosting your organic traffic and brand visibility. Hello, SEO!

The Content Repurposing Workflow

Here’s a great workflow you can use for content repurposing:

Identify Key Points and Evergreen Content
The first step is to review your existing content. This can be your blog posts, videos, podcasts, and social media posts. For each piece of evergreen content (evergreen content means it’s always relevant), you’ll want to identify its key points and valuable insights that can be repurposed across different formats. You’ll want to focus on content that’s performed well or is especially relevant to your target audience.

Determine Repurposing Opportunities
Once you know which pieces of content could work for repurposing, it’s time to think about how you might repurpose it.

For example, a blog post can be transformed into a video, a podcast episode, or a series of social media posts. A video or podcast can be transcribed and repurposed as blog content or transformed into bite-sized video snippets for social media platforms.

The important point here is to be creative. Look for ways to adapt your content to different formats that align with your target audience’s preferences for consuming content.

Customize for the Platform and Format
Once you know the opportunities each piece of content presents, you’ll want to identify the unique requirements and best practices for each of the platforms on which you’ll be repurposing the content. You’ll want to take the time to tailor your repurposed content to fit the platform and format you’re targeting.

For social media posts, focus on concise and engaging snippets that highlight the main ideas.

For videos, ensure the content is visually appealing and optimized for the platform’s specifications.

For blogs, make sure the post is personable, visually appealing, and clearly written.

In other words, you want to adapt your content to the platform to provide a seamless experience for your audience.

Optimize for SEO
When repurposing your content, don’t forget to optimize it for search engines. You’ll want to conduct keyword or hashtag research relevant to each format and incorporate those keywords strategically.

(If you’re not sure how to optimize for SEO, here’s a quick read on how to do it: 5 Powerful SEO Marketing Skills Every Business Need to Develop Now)

Promote Across Channels
Once your repurposed content’s ready, it’s time to promote it across various channels. You’ll want to share your blog posts, videos, podcasts, and social media snippets on relevant platforms to reach your target audience. This can look like including them in email marketing, social media advertising, and influencer collaborations. Each of these marketing tactics can dramatically increase the reach and impact of your repurposed content.

Save Time and Improve Efficiency with Content Repurposing

Look, this probably won’t surprise you, I’m a huge believer in content repurposing. Obviously, it enhances your content marketing strategy. However, my favorite benefit is that it saves you time and effort in content creation – especially if you know how to effectively leverage ChatGPT.

So, instead of constantly creating new content from scratch, repurposing allows you to leverage your existing assets and give them new life. And when you repurpose evergreen content, you can maintain a consistent online marketing presence without chewing up time and energy. The beauty of this is that now there’s time to work on other things.

If you want greater ROI from your content creation efforts, you’ve got to implement a content repurposing workflow that capitalizes on ChatGPT. By repurposing your valuable content into various formats and optimizing it for the channels you’ll be posting it on, you extend its reach, engage new audiences, improve search engine visibility, and, best of all, save time creating content.

You’ll also want to keep in mind that content repurposing is an ongoing process. You may even want to get in the habit of planning for repurposing every time you create a new piece of content. (This is what I do.)

But, if you prefer to repurpose in batches, that works too. You’ll just want to systematically review your content, so you can identify new repurposing opportunities.

Strategic and consistent repurposing of your content will amplify its impact and increase your content’s ROI. And since we all want to make sure we get maximum value from our marketing efforts, this is a tactic the entire KJ Content Marketing team recommends to every one of our clients.

In my experience, blogging is one of the most effective ways to market your business, connect with your target audience, and establish yourself as an authority in any industry – including the health and wellness space. However, not everyone has the time or writing skills to consistently create high-quality blog posts. This is where hiring a ghostwriter or using a language model like ChatGPT can be incredibly helpful.

So How Do You Know Which Option Is Best for You?

My hope is that you’ll be able to tell which, if either, is best for you by the end of this blog. I’ll share the pros and cons of each approach and provide tips and resources to help you make an informed decision.

Pros and Cons of Hiring a Ghostwriter

Hiring a ghostwriter can be an effective way to outsource your blog writing while still maintaining control over the content. Here are some points to consider:

Pros:

Saves time
Hiring a ghostwriter can free up your time to focus on other aspects of your business. Just keep in mind you’ll still need to review and/or edit the posts before publishing at least until you and your ghostwriter gel.

Professional writing
Ghostwriters are skilled at crafting high-quality content that’s engaging, informative, and error-free. Keep in mind that some ghostwriters are better than others, so you may need to work with a few before finding the right one for you.

Consistent blogging
Ghostwriters can help you maintain a regular blogging schedule with on-brand and on-topic content. For them to do this well, you’ll need to provide them with your brand voice guidelines and a list of topics or blog titles (and hopefully keywords) to write about.

Expertise
Ghostwriters can bring a fresh perspective to your blog and provide expert insights into your industry if they’re familiar with it.

Cons:

Cost
Hiring a ghostwriter can be expensive, especially if you want high-quality content from an experienced writer.

Lack of control
You may not have full control over the content, tone, or style of your blog posts. However, you can mitigate this by making sure you communicate well with the writer about your expectations which includes sharing your brand voice guidelines.

Confidentiality
You may need to trust your ghostwriter with confidential information and potentially sensitive topics. If that’s the case, you’ll want to be sure to have an NDA (non-disclosure agreement) in place.

Limited voice
Your ghostwriter may not be able to capture your unique voice and personality in their writing – at least at first. The better and usually more experienced the ghostwriter is, the better they’ll be at capturing your voice.

Tips for Hiring a Ghostwriter

If you decide to hire a ghostwriter, these tips will help you find the right one for you:

Define your goals and expectations
This really can’t be emphasized enough. As with any contractor or employee, you need to explicitly state what your goals and expectations are. So, before hiring a ghostwriter, be clear about what you want to achieve with your blog and what type of content you’re looking for.

Unfortunately, I had to learn this the hard way! It takes time to train someone about the way you like things to be. So, be sure to allow time for learning.

Research potential ghostwriters
Look for ghostwriters who have experience writing in your industry and who have a portfolio of high-quality work.

At one time I had a ghostwriter working for me who was amazing at writing deeply emotional blogs. I asked her to write something for a client that was more factual in nature and she just couldn’t do it. In fact, she said the topic was too boring to be able to write it well.

The moral of the story is you need to be sure, the person you hire to write for you likes to write about topics pertinent to your industry.

Set a budget
Decide how much you’re willing to pay for high-quality content. Then let your ghostwriter know what your budget is. This will help prevent any surprises when you receive your invoice.

Establish clear communication
Make sure you have a direct way of communicating with your ghostwriter. You’ll want to be clear about things like deadlines, revisions, and expectations for confidentiality.

This is another one I had to learn the hard way. I hired a ghostwriter who took deadlines as a wish. If didn’t work for her she just wouldn’t deliver the piece until she felt like delivering it. As you’ve probably guessed, I don’t work with her any longer.

Test their skills
Before committing to a long-term partnership, consider hiring a ghostwriter or two for trial projects. This will help you know whether they’re really up to the tasks you have in mind for them.

Now, that we’ve covered the topic of hiring a ghostwriter, it’s time to examine using ChatGPT for your blogging needs.

Pros and Cons of Using ChatGPT

Using ChatGPT is a relatively new approach to blog writing, but it can be a cost-effective and efficient way to generate high-quality content. Here are some things to consider:

Pros:

Cost-effective
Using ChatGPT is typically more affordable than hiring a ghostwriter. In fact, you can use Open AI’s version for free. (It doesn’t get any more cost-effective than that.)

Quick turnaround
ChatGPT can generate blog posts with the click of a button. This can go a long way toward helping you maintain a consistent blogging schedule.

Customizable
ChatGPT can be trained on your brand voice guidelines and industry-specific terminology to ensure the content is on-brand.

24/7 availability
ChatGPT doesn’t take vacations or have other scheduling conflicts. So it’s available anytime. So if you wake up in the middle of the night with a great blog idea, ChatGPT can help you get the blog written right then.

Cons:

Lack of personalization
ChatGPT is a program and doesn’t have emotions. So, it’s not capable of writing with emotion and may not be able to capture your unique voice and personality in its writing.

Limited expertise
ChatGPT may not have the same level of industry expertise as a ghostwriter. ChatGPT only knows what it’s been trained to know.

Prone to hallucinations
ChatGPT can create fictitious content or stretch the truth a lot. So, you’ll want to fact-check what it creates.

When I use ChatGPT I always go back through the content carefully to make sure all of the “facts” are factual.

Can abruptly stop in the middle of creation
Yes, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve asked ChatGPT to write something when it suddenly stops. If it has ever happened to you, then you know how extremely frustrating this is especially when you’re in the middle of work or facing a deadline.

Luckily, there is hope. I’ve had some luck getting ChatGPT to continue by using a command something like “Continue from ‘…the last 5 words written…'” Where ‘…the last 5 words written..’ are literally the last 5 words it spat out.

Not always original
ChatGPT has been known to copy content that it’s been trained on, so you’ll want to use a plagiarism checker on what it creates for you before posting it.

Tips for Using ChatGPT

If you decide to use ChatGPT, here are some tips to help you get the most out of it:

Train your ChatGPT model
To ensure that ChatGPT produces content that’s on-brand and consistent with your voice, take the time to train your model on your brand guidelines, tone, and style.

Edit and revise
While ChatGPT can generate high-quality content quickly, you’ll still want to edit and revise the content to ensure that it meets your standards and is error-free.

Use a plagiarism checker
To avoid any potential issues with duplicate content, use a plagiarism checker to ensure that the content generated by ChatGPT is original.

Use as a supplement
Consider using ChatGPT as a supplement to your own writing or as a way to generate content ideas that you can then expand upon. There are times I find it’s loads easier to edit and expand on something than to stare at a blank page.

Test and monitor results
As with any new approach to blogging, it’s important to test and monitor the results of using ChatGPT to make sure it’s meeting your goals and providing value to your audience.

Resources for Hiring a Ghostwriter or Using ChatGPT

Whether you choose to hire a ghostwriter or use ChatGPT, there are many resources available to help you get started:

Upwork
Upwork is a platform that connects businesses with freelancers, including ghostwriters who specialize in blog writing. You can search for ghostwriters based on their experience, rates, and reviews.

I’ve used Upwork a few times. It takes a bit to get used to the system, but I’ve found some great writers there.

Fiverr
Fiverr is a platform that offers a variety of freelance services, including blog writing and ChatGPT services. You can browse freelancers’ profiles, reviews, and pricing to find a suitable match.

Copyscape
Copyscape is a plagiarism checker that can help you ensure that the content generated by ChatGPT or your ghostwriter is original and unique.

Grammarly
Grammarly is a writing assistant tool that can help you edit and improve the quality of your content, whether it is generated by ChatGPT or a ghostwriter.

I use the free version of Grammarly on just about everything I write. It’s good, but it’s not perfect. So, if you’re sure you’re correct, it’s OK to ignore its recommendations.

ChatGPT platforms
There are various platforms available that offer ChatGPT services, such as OpenAI’s GPT-3 and Hugging Face’s Transformers. These platforms can be trained on your specific needs and preferences to generate high-quality content.

Deciding whether to hire a ghostwriter or use ChatGPT for your blogging needs depends on several factors, including your budget, time constraints, and desired level of control over the content. While both approaches have their pros and cons, the key is to determine which option aligns best with your goals and preferences. Hopefully, the resources and tips listed above will help you make the best decision for your business about creating engaging, informative, and effective blog content.

It seems like everyone’s writing blogs. And one of the laments I most often hear from our clients is “I don’t feel like there’s anything new I can write.” What I tell them and want you to know is your perspective on a topic is what will make it unique and new. And the first place potential readers get a glimpse of how your perspective is unique is through your blog post titles.

If you settle for boring or even just meh blog titles, your blogs will never get the attention they (and you) deserve. As a blogger, you’ve got to know how to write blog post titles with Oomph! Something that encourages your ideal clients to click through to your post.

To help get your creative juices flowing, here are 5 ideas for you to consider as you sit down to write your next blog post title:

Pique Your Reader’s Curiosity
Have you ever read a blog post title and thought, “I need to know more about that”? If so, then you know what it’s like to have a title spark your curiosity.

Intriguing titles invite the reader to learn more. An easy way to do that is by starting a story. “10 Surprising Facts About Sunflowers” and “The Secret Squirrel-Chasing Strategies That Only the Pros Know” are some silly examples of blog titles that suggest a story. (Although, I’ll bet my puppies JoJo and Cassie would want me to read them the last one.)

Curiosity is a really powerful emotion you can use to get readers to click through to your post.

Be Specific and Clear
The second strategy is to be specific and clear in your title. Readers want to know exactly what they can expect to learn or gain from your post, so make sure your title reflects that. For example, instead of using a vague title like “How to Save Money,” use a title like “10 Simple Ways to Save Money on Your Monthly Bills.”

Specificity can also help you get the right people to click. Imagine you’re a physical therapist and your ideal clients have chronic back pain. You could write a blog post titled “5 Pro Tips from a Physical Therapist for Eliminating Chronic Back Pain.” This title will attract people suffering from chronic back pain or people who care about someone who suffers from chronic back pain. The title also tells the reader exactly what to expect when they read this post.

Use Emotional Triggers
You’re more likely to grab a reader’s attention when you use words to trigger emotions like curiosity, fear, excitement, or urgency in your blog post titles.

Fear is always a powerful emotion. And when it’s used appropriately, it can help to make sure the information your ideal client needs is available to them. (Unfortunately, fear triggers are overused by most of the media, so I always recommend treading lightly when it comes to using fear to trigger readers.)

Some examples of titles that could make sense for a physical therapist to use could be “How to Prevent Your Chronic Back Pain from Keeping You on the Sidelines of Life” or “Stop Letting Chronic Back Pain Keep You From Enjoying Your Life.”

Using emotional triggers of excitement and urgency can encourage readers to take action. If you’re a travel agent, you could use blog titles like “10 Must-Have Items You Need to Pack for Your Next Adventure” or “The Ultimate Adventure-Travel Checklist: Don’t Forget a Thing!”

You’ve probably heard that humans like the think of themselves as rational beings, but we’re really emotionally driven. So when you can use emotionally triggering words and phrases in your blog titles, you’ll be able to create a connection with your audience and encourage them to take action and click to read your blog.

Use Numbers
Numbers and lists work really well when you want to write engaging blog post titles. It’s because they tap into the specificity tip mentioned above. Titles with numbers in them also tend to sound more authoritative.

And according to BuzzSumo’s research into the most shared, of the ten most sharable phrases with which to begin a blog post title five of them featured numbers.

Using numbers can also help make complex ideas easier to understand. If you’re a coach, you might want to write a blog post titled something like “10 Steps to Finding Your Life Purpose” or “5 Simple Hacks to Get More Done in Less Time.”

Another strategy to help you write effective blog post titles is to use numbers and lists. Titles with numbers often perform well because they provide readers with a clear idea of what to expect from your post. For example, “7 Simple [Topic] Hacks That Will Save You Time and Money” or “15 [Topic] Mistakes You Don’t Want to Make.”

Numbers appeal to our innate desire to gather information quickly and appear more rational. So, they are great to include in your blog post titles.

Use Keywords
This is my favorite tip and where I start all of my creative efforts when it comes to writing blog post titles. Keywords help you to speak the same language your ideal clients do. Using the same language is vital when you’re trying to write blog post titles that they’ll choose to read because the title will sound familiar and feel more comfortable.

So how do you find keywords? Well, I like to use SEMRUSH’s Keyword Magic Tool. However, you can use UberSuggest or Ahrefs.

In my experience, just putting keywords in your blog post titles doesn’t work as well as using a full SEO strategy. However, using something, even if the keywords across your site aren’t aligned, is better than not using them at all.

And here’s a bonus tip: Keep your blog post titles relatively short, yet still captivating. If your titles are too long, they won’t show up correctly in search engine results.

Making sure you keep your audience in mind is the common denominator of all these tips for writing blog post titles that help you stand out from the crowd. And, yes, it takes some practice to do it quickly and well.

Luckily, there are some resources that can make creating titles easier.

CoSchedule Headline Analyzer
This free tool allows you to enter your proposed title. It then analyzes your title based on factors such as word balance, headline type, and length. It provides a score out of 100 and suggestions for improving your title.

I’ll use this tool to quickly fine-tune a title.

HubSpot Blog Topic Generator
If you’re struggling to come up with a title, this tool can help generate ideas based on the topic or keywords you enter.

Advanced Marketing Institute Emotional Headline Analyzer
I’ve just recently discovered this tool and it’s really cool. It gives you an Emotional Marketing Value (EMV) score and can even identify a predominant emotion classification for your headline.

Google Trends
This is a fun tool to research keywords and phrases related to your topic and see how popular they are today. However, I don’t recommend using it for evergreen keywords.

BuzzSumo
According to their website, BuzzSumo lets you see the most popular posts related to your topic and analyze their headlines to see what works best.

I’ve not used BuzzSumo because it comes with a significant price tag. However, they do offer a 30-Day Free Trial if you want to give them a spin.

These resources can help you get insight into what types of blog post titles work best for your ideal clients. And when you implement the insights you gain, you’ll be able to improve your chances of standing out online.

And don’t worry if it feels like a slog to come up with good blog post titles. It’s one of those things that you become better at with practice. So, keep experimenting, learning, and refining your approach.

This advice applies to me too. As I’m writing this in 2023, I know that my suggestions for writing powerful blog post titles will change over time. So, I’ll be updating it in a couple of years because what works today may not work tomorrow when it comes to capturing the imagination and piquing the interest of people online.

Health and wellness professionals often have a challenge attracting readers to their blogs. Are you struggling to attract readers to yours? Do you find it challenging to rank your blog posts on search engines like Google? In my experience, the solution often lies in writing SEO-friendly blog posts people want to read.

It’s time that your products and services go from obscurity to helping those who need you most. So, I’m going to share some of my favorite tips and tricks on how to write blog posts that are optimized for search engines and engage your readers.

What is SEO?

Just to make sure we’re all on the same page, I’m going to explain what SEO is. SEO stands for search engine optimization, which is the process of optimizing your website and blogs to rank higher in search engine results pages (SERPs). When you write SEO-friendly blog posts, you’re making it easier for search engines to understand what your content is about. This can translate to higher rankings in search results.

The thing is you don’t just want to have Google understand what your blog posts are about, you also want readers to read them!

Why is SEO important for your blog?

And believe it or not, SEO really is the first step in getting people to read your posts. It helps you to reach a larger audience. When your blog posts rank higher in search results, more people are likely to click on your post and read it.

And SEO can help you to establish yourself as an authority in your niche. When people see your blog posts ranking higher in search results, they are more likely to trust your content.

Now that we’ve established the importance of SEO for your blog, let’s move on to the tips and tricks for writing SEO-friendly blog posts.

Conduct keyword research.
Keyword research is the first step in writing SEO-friendly blog posts. It’s the process of identifying the keywords that your target audience is using to search for content in your niche. (Keep in mind that keywords can be either a single word or a phrase.)

For example, if you’re writing a blog post about “yoga and sciatica,” you could use a keyword research tool like SEMRush to find a keyword such as “yoga pose for sciatica” or “yoga stretches for sciatica.”

Once you’ve identified the primary keyword you want to use for a blog, you’ll use it in your blog post title, subheadings, and throughout the body of the post. However, the important thing is to use the keyword effectively and naturally. Otherwise, it can seem that you’re stuffing the keyword into the post, which can harm your SEO efforts and discourage people from wanting to read your post.

Write engaging and informative content.
Writing engaging and informative content is crucial for your blog’s success. Your blog post should provide value to your readers and answer their questions. The more informative and engaging your content is, the more likely people are to share it on social media, which can lead to more traffic to your blog and more people learning about how you can help them.

Writing engaging and informative content is crucial for your blog’s success. Your blog post should provide value to your readers and answer their questions.

Let’s return to the example of writing a blog post about “yoga and sciatica.” For this blog post, you’d want to provide a detailed description of each of the poses or stretches you’re recommending.

The more informative and engaging your content is, the more likely people are to share it on social media, which can lead to more traffic to your blog.

Use internal and external links.
Using internal and external links in your blog posts is another way to improve your SEO efforts and give your readers more information. Internal links are links to other pages on your website or blog. External links are links to other websites. Internal links can help search engines understand the structure of your website. External links can help establish your blog as a reputable source of information.

For the “yoga and sciatica” blog post, it would make sense to link to other blog posts on your website that provide additional information about specific yoga poses or link to external websites that provide additional resources on yoga.

Optimize your meta description and title tag.
This is where things get a little technical but stick with me here because this is important.

The meta description and title tag are two essential elements of your blog post that can impact your SEO efforts. The meta description is a summary of your blog post that appears in the search results, while the title tag is the title of your blog post that appears in the search results.

You’ll want to optimize both of these elements with your target keyword to help search engines understand what your content is about.

The meta description for the “yoga and sciatica” blog post could be “Suffering from sciatica? These easy and effective yoga stretches for sciatica will give you relief.” Your title tag could be “5 Yoga Stretches for Sciatica to Ease Your Pain.”

If you have a WordPress website, I recommend Yoast SEO to all of my clients. It’s an easy-to-use, SEO tool that can help you optimize your blog posts for both SEO and readability.

Prioritize your readers’ experience.
While SEO is crucial, it’s equally important to prioritize your readers’ experience. After all, they’re the ones who will ultimately determine the success of your blog. So, make sure that your blog posts are not only optimized for search engines but also provide value and engage your readers. For example, you could ask your readers for feedback or include a call-to-action at the end of your blog post to encourage them to leave a comment or share your post on social media.

And when people want to engage with your post or even just read to the end, it also helps your SEO rankings.

Promote your blog post.
Promoting your blog post is essential to reach a larger audience. After all, if no one knows about your blog post, how will they find it? Promote your blog post on social media, email newsletters, or other channels to increase its visibility. Additionally, you could reach out to other bloggers or websites in your niche to see if they would be interested in sharing your blog post with their audience.

And, yes, increased visibility also helps your SEO which, of course, helps to raise your practice from obscurity.

Writing SEO-friendly blog posts that people want to read is one important way to grow your online presence. The 6 tips and tricks above can help you optimize your blog posts for search engines while keeping your readers reading your valuable, informative, and engaging content.

But you need to know one very important thing. SEO is not a quick fix, it’s an ongoing process. So, it may take time to see results. My recommendation is that you stay consistent with your efforts and continue to optimize your blog posts for search engines and your ideal client’s interests.

Are you tired of spending hours writing blog posts that never seem to get any traffic? Do you want to learn how to write a blog post outline to produce a post that not only engages your audience but also ranks high on search engine results pages?

When I started my first business in 2006, that was exactly what I wanted to do. I knew blogging was important. I’d heard something about keywords someplace but didn’t really know what they were. So I made them up and just wrote and wrote and wrote. I didn’t know how to use the keywords. I didn’t know how to craft catchy titles or even meaningful ones. And I was marginal at organizing my thoughts in a way that readers could easily follow.

If you’re thinking I was a hot mess, you’re right, I was. I spent hours upon hours writing with no results. But I eventually channeled my enthusiasm and learned what to do.

In fact, it’s because I learned how to write blog post outlines that include SEO that I’m able to drive organic traffic to my websites today.

And yet, when you really stop to think about it, writing blog posts is an art. For most of us bloggers, we work out a solid outline before beginning to write.

I do this (and I imagine most bloggers do this) because a blog post outline makes it easier to move from one point to the next, stay on track, and ensure that all the necessary points are covered in the piece I’m writing.

The thing is in order for your blogs to be found in search, you need to do more than just create an outline that supports the message you want to share. You need to incorporate the necessary features to make your post SEO-friendly in your outline as well.

Now I’ll admit the last paragraph might be a bit intimidating, but I promise that the process I’m going to share will make creating your blog post outline easy. And when you’re done, you’ll have a roadmap for your post that ensures it’s not only readable but SEO friendly too.

1. Start with keyword research.

Before you begin writing your outline, you need to know what your ideal client is struggling with. What would they want to read?

After you have a few general ideas, it’s time to do some keyword research to understand how they’re searching for the topic you want to write about. My go-to tool for keyword research is SEMrush, but there are plenty of others out there.

(Here’s my affiliate link to SEMrush if you’re interested in checking it out.)

You’ll want to select a keyword for your blog post that gets a reasonable amount of traffic and isn’t impossible to rank for. You’ll also want to use the keyword throughout your outline to ensure you’ll use it throughout your post.

2. Identify your main points.

Now that you know your keyword, and have taken a peek at a few others before landing on this one, it’s time to do a little research. You want your post to stand out from your competitors’ posts on the same topic. Read what they’ve written so you can figure out what you have to say that’s more valuable than what they’ve written.

After you finish your research, you should have a pretty good idea of the main points you want to make. These main points should be what you want readers to remember from your post.

For example, you can see the main points I came up with for the outline I created for this blog post by looking at the headers.

3. Organize your main points.

I don’t know about you, but sometimes the way I think about things isn’t the most organized or easy for someone else to understand. That’s why I included this step.

It’s important for you to take the time to make sure your main points flow. There should be a nice logical sequence to the points you want to make so your reader can easily follow your thoughts or the instructions you’re providing.

4. Use headings and subheadings.

Sometimes when creating a blog post outline, I come up with really meaty main points. When that happens I know I need to add a few more details to each of my main points. After I add the appropriate points to support the main points, I start thinking about headings and subheadings for my blog post.

Usually, the headings and subheadings drop straight out of the outline, but sometimes they need a little polish. And, of course, the purpose of identifying the headings and subheadings at this point is to begin working on making the final piece SEO-friendly and easier to read.

5. Include supporting details.

Now it’s time to add a little more flesh to the outline. What additional details need to be added to illustrate or clarify your message?

When I reach this step, I start thinking about things to make the post more valuable to the reader, and also help SEO:

Which of my other blog posts should I link to from this post?

What statistics do I need?

Are there any quotes I want to include?

What type of illustrations would make this piece more engaging or help to get my point across?

6. Add a call to action.

The whole point of writing blogs is to influence people in some way. This is especially true when you’re blogging to promote your business. So you need to end your post with a call to action that encourages your readers to engage with you. You might ask them to share your post on social, answer a question in the comments, visit another page on your site, or click a link to join your list.

By following these tips, you set yourself up to write a blog post outline to guide you (or someone else) in writing a post that engages your audience and ranks well on search engine results pages. Remember, the key is to create content that is both informative and enjoyable to read. SEO just comes along for the ride because it shouldn’t be blatantly obvious to the reader. With a well-structured outline, you can achieve both of these goals and take your blog to the next level.

So, what are you waiting for? Start writing your next blog post outline today and see the difference it makes in your website’s traffic!

Whether you’re a B2B, B2C, Fortune 500, or mom-and-pop, you know that 21st-century marketing involves more than a handshake and a business card. Chances are you’re juggling product and website development, industry expertise, tech savvy, social media, and blogging to promote your business.

And I would guess it all gets a bit overwhelming.

So let’s put our blinders on and focus on one of your highest ROI marketing tools: blogging.

There are differences between blogging as a hobby and blogging to promote your business. Probably the biggest difference lies in the requirement — or at least the self-discipline — to consistently publish.

When you’re blogging as a hobby, you’re indulging a creative outlet. In many ways, this format is akin to the origin of blogging, which was more about journaling with an audience.

The nice thing about this hobby approach is that you can write what you want, when you want. SEO and publishing calendars be damned!

You can also take advantage of a generous list of free and self-hosted blogging sites that make creative blogging easy.

Blogging for business purposes, however, comes with a honey-do list that can make the effort seem like a 180 from the free-spirited blogging. Structure vs. free-flow, schedule vs. whenever, purpose vs. whatever-strikes-your-fancy.

But fear not. Think of blogging as just one more component of your commitment to the amazing, world-changing brain-child that is your product or service.

Not sure how or why blogging will grow your business? Here are just a few of the benefits of business blogging:

Generates leads from organic traffic

Builds trust with your customers

Builds brand reputation

Keeps your business active on the web

To get you started, here are 7 things to know about blogging to promote your business:

Purpose is essential.

This may sound self-evident; and yet, many a blog has fizzled for lack of purpose.

Are you trying to teach something? Build your email list? Generate conversation with feedback and the sharing of ideas? Direct new traffic to your website? Sell a product or a service?

Having a firm grasp of your purpose, along with knowing your target audience, will dictate your content.

Your target audience dictates your content.

Knowing your purpose may be essential, but it’s of little use if you don’t know your audience.

Let’s say you sell a technical device designed to make technology less intimidating for senior citizens. You will obviously want to deliver “technical” content in a user-friendly, non-intimidating, bare-bones way.

Your visual, video and ancillary content will need to cater to this niche population, not to millennials who were born via WiFi.

Knowing your target audience will also help you decide where and how to share your blog and other content.

Is this audience better suited for emails, social media, or both? Is this a short-on-time, click-and-buy audience, or an older audience that loves conversation and building relationships?

In the same way that an athlete or sports team practices with its next opponent in mind, knowing your audience is key to successful blogging.

Quality content is imperative.

Hobby blogging is pretty forgiving because there’s really nothing to forgive. Unless you’re trying to monetize your blog, you set your own rules.

But, when blogging to promote your business, one of the biggest “rules” is that quality matters.

Remember that you’re directed by your purpose — educating, building authority in your industry, selling your product, etc.

And that authority thing is extremely important, as you have global competition vying for the same audience. You want your reader to bookmark your post because it’s so informative and well-written.

And you want Google to notice that you’re writing relevant, high-quality, sought-out content…and rank you accordingly.

Substance matters. Style matters. And — sorry not sorry — grammar and spelling matter.

Appearance matters.

You may have the makings of a blogging Pulitzer. But if a reader comes to your page and sees a wall of endless text, your bestseller might get passed over.

(Yes, we humans can be pretty superficial, even when it comes to inanimate stuff.)

Choosing a good hosting site and premium theme will help you create a visually inviting and well-organized blog.

Window shopping, after all, is about getting new customers in the door.

You don’t have to do it all alone.

One of the best advantages of blogging to promote your business is that you can get a huge return on your investment.

If you’re writing quality content on a regular, consistent basis, you can develop promotional relationships with other bloggers. You scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours. You link to my blog, I’ll link to yours. You give me a bump on social media, I’ll do the same for you.

Blogging becomes a forum for sharing information for the benefit of your audience. And sometimes that means bringing in guest bloggers, influencers, and thought leaders.

Share the spotlight. There’s enough to go around when you’re producing good work for the right reasons.

One blog, many forms.

Blogging takes a lot of time and discipline. And, let’s face it, you’re not likely to feel like sitting down to pump out 1,800 words every time you have a blog scheduled.

That’s why mixing up your format can give you both a writing reprieve and a creative outlet.

Perhaps you want to make your regular weekend-preview blog a Friday Funday by posting a video blog. And once a month you do an interview with a leading expert or influencer in your niche.

You can also host another blogger for one post. Or simply update an old blog that received a big response.

Mix it up, add visuals and moving parts, and give your audience something to look forward to.

Conversion is a process built on relationship.

Your end goal may be a spike in your bank account. But the process of getting there involves a lot more than a hard sell or buy-buy-buy mentality.

There’s too much competition in a fast-paced format to indulge the notion that you own your niche market. Consumers want to be informed, and they want to trust the entities with which they do business.

Think about how much more has to go into building trust with someone you never meet in person. And approach your blogging from that perspective.

The conversion to revenue will come when you have embraced the role of blogging as a means of answering your audience’s questions.

The axiom is true: People buy from those they know, like, and trust.

By now you probably know that writing blogs is a great way to get your voice and brand out into the virtual world. But writing blogs for SEO is what actually makes them applicable and easy to find.

We would all love to believe that readers hang on our every word. And surely the world waits with bated breath for our next output.

But once we reel in our egos and wishlists, we’re left with the reality that we have competition. A lot of competition. Like, 500 million-blogs-out-of-1.7 billion-websites kind of competition.

And those bloggers are pumping out 2 million blog posts…per day.

Writing blogs for SEO really means you’re writing for two: your target audience and your search engine.

One is going to read with a human brain, emotions, and buying power. And the other is going to read with a complicated, mathematical, algorithmic brain and ranking power.

Despite their differences, these two blog readers work together to determine the success of your blog. And, if you’re writing blogs for business, it’s important to understand what both are looking for and how to make everyone happy.

Here are 6 keys you need to know before writing blogs for SEO:

You need SEO and user-friendly content.

As mentioned above, you’re writing to and for people who are seeking answers to questions and solutions to problems.

You’re also writing to an invisible purveyor of the www. And that wizard-behind-the-curtain is keeping an eye on what the human seekers are seeking and what the human providers are providing.

Your job as a blogger is to seek what the seekers are seeking and provide it in a way that captures their attention.

You also have to follow the wizard’s rules in order to be quickly and easily findable. And that requires more than just letting your thoughts and niche expertise spill out onto the screen.

You need great content.

SEO isn’t a stand-alone guarantor of success. “I used my keywords and headings and wrote short paragraphs and did everything by the book. Why aren’t people coming?”

Understanding how SEO marketing works starts with the content that makes SEO applicable and worth the effort in the first place.

You don’t need to have a Pulitzer playbook to be a great blogger. But you do need to care about your writing — its organization, style, impactfulness, and yes, adherence to good grammar.

You need fresh content.

One of the big differences between just having a blog and writing blogs for SEO is the frequency and consistency of your posts. You can’t be a one-hit-wonder then take a sabbatical.

How frequently you should post a blog depends on the size of your business and what you’re trying to achieve. That could mean one to four times a week or multiple times a day.

One of the best ways to generate new content is to freshen up old content.

Part of the beauty of SEO is that it compounds organic traffic to your blog. With more and more people seeing the same post over time, freshening up old posts can boost favorites and brand recognition.

Whatever you do to generate fresh content, be sure to create a publishing schedule and stick to it. And remember that quality content is your priority.

You need to establish goals.

Writing blogs for SEO requires forethought and planning. Why are you doing this in the first place? What is your business and product’s mission? Are you blogging to generate an email list or to achieve a certain sales quota?

Having a firm grasp of what you’re trying to achieve will give direction and purpose to your blog content.

You need to know your niche.

Chances are, no matter how good your product or service is, you’re not reinventing the wheel. That means you have competition. It also means you have resources.

Understanding your niche, whether it’s fashion or technology gadgets or childcare, is essential.

Blogging helps to establish authority in an area, so it’s imperative that you know yours.

Even if you’re a seasoned pro at what you do, things change. New generations put new spins on old things. And there is always someone out there who is tweaking the tried-and-true to make it better.

So dig in and learn what’s going on in your niche. What are customers asking, saying, buying, wanting? What terms are they using?

Keep the Urban Dictionary on-hand. Get involved in relevant online communities and study the exchanges and comments.

Blogging asks your audience to trust you and your expertise. So make sure you have the expertise they need.

You need to know what your audience is asking.

This is all about seeking what the seekers are seeking.

Remember that blogging is, at its heart, about connecting with your audience. They’re not looking to read the next epic novel. They’re looking for answers and solutions.

Therefore, if you’re going to provide those answers and solutions, you need to know the questions. What are people actually typing into their search engine bar? (You might be surprised by what keeps people up at night.)

The purpose of doing a keyword search is to find high-volume search terms that will guide the creation of content.

The process of doing a keyword search when writing blogs for SEO starts with knowing your industry or niche.

By starting with your niche knowledge base, you can derive related topics and seed keywords. From there you can use a keyword search tool to help you come up with a list of keywords to direct your writing.

Don’t despair if doing all the keyword research sounds like too much effort, we can help. To learn more, simply contact us here.

Blogging is one of the best ways for your business to stay relevant in a fast-paced, ever-changing world. Therefore, having a strategy for it is imperative.

Writing blogs for SEO is a process of answering the needs of your target audience through a series of optimized steps. Understanding and implementing the above 6 keys before you start writing will ensure you are optimized every step of the way.
