By now you’ve probably seen headlines like these: SEO is Dead. Google is Broken. AI is Taking Over Search.

I’m really over the fearmongering, so let’s cut through the noise and stop scaring each other.

The future of SEO isn’t dead. But it isn’t what it used to be. So, if you’re still using the old playbook (or your marketing team is)—pumping out keyword-stuffed blog posts, obsessing over meta descriptions, chasing backlinks like it’s 2015—you’re losing ground instead of gaining it.

What we’re seeing now is a revolution in how visibility, credibility, and trust are earned online (aka EEAT score). And the business owners who understand this shift will be the ones who thrive.

The SEO Concern Is Real—But It’s Not the Whole Story

The fear is understandable because change is scary (for most people). Google’s SERPS (results pages) are clogged with ads. AI-generated content is flooding the internet and tanking SEO for so many websites. New tools like Perplexity and ChatGPT give people answers without sending them to your website. And let’s not ignore the obvious: users are skipping traditional search altogether and heading straight to TikTok, Reddit, or YouTube.

So yes, the old model is crumbling.

But here’s the thing: Search isn’t dying. It’s decentralizing.

People still need answers. They need solutions. And we need trusted providers.

Think of a local service business, like a residential contractor, whose referrals dried up post-pandemic or are drying up as fears of recession grow. That owner still needs a steady stream of leads. Now, their potential clients are looking for social proof, clear value, and visibility in places beyond Google search—places like Nextdoor and Google Business Profile reviews.

People are getting more intentional about where they look and who they trust.

“How do I rank on Google?” isn’t the question anymore. Today you need to be asking, “How do I become the go-to provider, no matter where people are searching?”

The Old SEO Playbook

Just to be sure we’re clear about what I’m calling the old playbook, here’s what it was in 5 moves:

Write 1,200 words around a high-volume keyword.

Hit your H1s, H2s, and meta description.

Link to a few other posts.

Get backlinks.

Watch your rankings rise and the traffic to your site grow. (At least, that was the idea.)

We used this system reliably for our clients when Google was the gatekeeper of online search, and the algorithm rewarded technical optimization and volume.

But today? The algorithm is overwhelmed. Who and what people trust has shifted. Optimization is only a small piece of the puzzle. Now, your focus needs to be on authentic content.

The New Rules of Visibility

Luckily, the future of SEO doesn’t require an entirely new playbook. You just need to look at it a little differently.

What matters now is:

1. Trust over traffic. Users are prioritizing platforms and sources they already trust. That might be a subreddit, a TikTok creator, or a local expert. Google is no longer the only filter.

2. Proof over polish. AI can generate competent content. What it can’t fake is real experience. Specifics. Perspective. Case studies. Personality.

3. Presence over publishing. Being everywhere isn’t the goal. But being visible where the right conversations are happening is.

What You Should Do Now

Most business owners don’t have time to decode every SEO shift and update their strategy. And you shouldn’t have to. So, take a deep breath. What’s happening with SEO isn’t a crisis. It’s an opportunity for you to refocus your marketing efforts.

Here’s where you can start to take advantage of this opportunity:

Audit your content for substance. Stop churning out content (i.e., copying and pasting what ChatGPT or Claude spits out). Start asking questions like these before you publish: “Is this useful?”, “Does this show I know what I’m talking about?” and “Would I trust this if I were a customer?”

Get specific about your experiences. Share what you’ve actually seen, done, or learned. The more detailed your perspective, the more irreplaceable you become.

Be findable in new ways. You don’t have to be on every platform. But you have to show up where your ideal customer is searching or asking questions. (This is the one I personally struggle with the most, but I know it’s critical to helping the people I want to help.)

Build your reputation and stop focusing on just rankings. Think like a PR person—not sure how they think? Here are some ideas to get your wheels turning. Can someone cite you as an expert? Have you shown up in other people’s content? Are you building digital authority that outlives an algorithm tweak?

It might be easier to think about it like this: Would someone link to your insights, quote you, or recommend you even if Google disappeared tomorrow? Hopefully, that’s a powerful and motivating perspective shift.

Your Real Opportunity

Yes, the old SEO playbook is dead. And I’m sure you’re familiar with the adage, “When one door closes another opens, but all too often there’s a long hallway in between.” In this case, you can shorten the hallway if you adapt quickly.

While the internet floods with AI-generated sludge, you can stand out by being useful, real, and relevant.

Gone are the days of SEO being a technical checklist. The future of SEO is about building credibility. Business owners like you who are willing to adjust their marketing strategy will recognize this opportunity to build their brands to stand out wherever their ideal clients are searching for them.

Visibility doesn’t come from out-hacking Google. Now, it comes from out-helping your audience.

And when you really look at it, that’s not new. It’s just honest.

If you’re overwhelmed, you’re not alone. But you’re also not out of the game. The future of SEO for your business is still yours to shape. If you’d like help, you can contact me here.

If you’ve ever read any of my other blogs about SEO, you know it is my favorite way to grow a business online. So, I’m super excited that you’re curious about how to create an effective SEO content strategy.

The thing is before you can do this, you need to have a solid foundation. You need to have an overall SEO strategy for your website. If you just focus on your content, you’ll not have the framework necessary for successful SEO.

In my experience, an overall SEO strategy must cover the search space to support your business today and for the next 3-5 years. And, yes, I know, no one has a crystal ball to accurately know where their business will be in 3-5 years. However, you should have goals, and those goals are what you should think about as you build out or work with someone to create and implement the overall SEO strategy for your website.

So, let’s assume you’ve got your SEO foundation in place and you’re ready to roll up your sleeves and build your content strategy.

Here are the 3 steps you need:

1. Identify your blog categories

The first step is to brainstorm the high-level topics that will be the basis of your content strategy. The topics should align with your products and services and resonate with your ideal clients. One way to approach this is to think about their main pain points and interests.

After you’ve got your list, narrow it down to the top 3 or 4 topics because you don’t want to spread your content too thin. It’s these that you’ll use to build out your SEO content strategy.

For example, if you run a health and wellness business, your topics might include nutrition, fitness, mental health, bodywork, energy work, holistic therapies, and relational health. Select the top 3 or 4 which could be nutrition, fitness, mental health, and holistic therapies.

Your top 3-4 topics are your blog categories. You’ll use them to guide your content creation, so it stays interesting and relevant to your audience.

2. Research keywords

The next step is to conduct keyword research for each of your categories. This process helps you find the best keywords to support your ideal clients at different stages of their buyer journey.

I like to use SEMrush, but you can also use Ahrefs, Majestic, or one of the other keyword research tools out there.

When doing your research, pay attention to search volume, competitiveness, and search intent. You’ll also want to look for a mix of short- and long-tail keywords. Short-tail keywords are more general, have higher search volume, and higher competition. On the other hand, long-tail keywords are more specific, have lower search volume, and often have lower competition.

The key is to find keywords that are searched for frequently enough and aren’t too competitive. Once you find those, look at search intent to understand where in the buyer’s journey people searching for this term are.

Keyword research isn’t the most glamorous task. However, when you really get a feel for how people are searching for the topics you want to write about, you set yourself up to write content people will want to read. And this is the best foundation for an effective SEO content strategy that you could ask for.

3. Draft a 3-month content calendar

When I provide content calendars to my clients, I like to work in 12-title blocks. For most, this is a 3-month content calendar because they plan on writing one blog a week, and there’s usually one week each quarter where writing just isn’t in the cards.

I really like the 12-title block because it offers enough of a roadmap to understand how the blogs fit together without being overwhelming.

My go-to tool for a content calendar is a spreadsheet. It’s easy for me to create and for my clients to follow. Here’s a screenshot of the template I use:

There are a few things I’d like you to notice.

First, the 4 categories are rotated through 3 times during the 12 weeks. This helps the search engines get used to you sharing your expertise across all the categories instead of appearing like you’re first an expert in one area and then changing your mind and focusing on something else.

The next column lists the keywords for each blog. I want you to remember that the keywords are the keywords. You’ll want to focus on the keyword exactly as you found it when you did the research. If you don’t, you’ll undermine the effectiveness SEO content strategy.

I recently found an absolutely amazing keyword for one of my clients: “blah-blah-blah coaches”. It fit her brand. It addressed a weak point in the buyer’s journey. It even had an incredible search volume and low competition.

But when it came time to write the blog, she wanted to change the keyword from “blah-blah-blah coaches” to “blah-blah-blah coach”.

On the surface, this might not seem like a big deal. However, there was a huge difference between the plural and singular forms of the two keywords. The singular form didn’t match the search intent we needed, had a much lower search volume, and much higher competition.

So I helped her reimagine how she could use the plural form and she easily wrote the piece that best fit into her SEO content strategy.

Then you’ll see the suggested titles to be used for each blog. You’ll want each title to contain its keyword. Outside of that, the titles aren’t carved in stone. In fact, I recommend you play with them a little bit to make sure you’re crafting suggested titles that are engaging. Headline Studio is a cool tool to help you create clickable blog titles. They even have a free version!

You’re probably wondering why I call this column “Suggested Titles”. Sometimes my clients are struck by inspiration and want to change the title to better suit what they want to write about. They were hesitant to do so until I told them the titles were just suggestions. I want you to feel good about leaning into any inspiration you have, too.

Finally, let’s talk a little about this being a 3-month content calendar.

Breaking your SEO content strategy into 12-title blocks doesn’t mean each block has to last you 3 months. It could cover 3 months or 24 weeks or 36 weeks or even just 1 day if you have a large team of writers. How long it takes you to get through the 12 titles depends on your situation and SEO goals. Whatever you choose, just be sure the timeframe allows you to publish consistently since Google seems to reward consistent publication.

These 3 steps are what it takes to create an effective SEO content strategy. However, the strategy is just the beginning. You’ve got to actually write and publish the blogs (or have someone else write them for you).

Yeah, you probably already knew that. Although, over the years, I’ve seen way too many people (including myself) learn something or pay for a service they never implemented. I don’t want that to happen here.

So here are a few ideas to make it even easier for you to start publishing the blogs you need for your SEO content strategy.

This might sound like a comment from Captain Obvious, but I don’t want to make assumptions. You’ll want to optimize your blog posts for search engines. This means a lot of different things like using your keyword naturally within the content, making sure the content is easy to read and skim, writing a blog that people want to read, and more technical things like links, page titles, alt-tags, and meta descriptions. If you’re not used to writing for SEO, this can be a lot to deal with.

Right now, all my websites are WordPress-based. The same is true for most of my clients. Luckily, there are several SEO plugins for WordPress. My favorite is Yoast Premium. After a quick tutorial, it’s easy to understand and even my tech-phobic clients quickly pick up how to optimize their content with Yoast Premium’s analysis.

Regardless of which platform your site is built on, you’ll want to use whatever SEO tools are available on your platform.

One of the things that most forget when implementing their SEO content strategy is the importance of internal linking. Internal linking is any link from on page or post on your website to another page or post on your site. When you’re writing, you’ll want to link to other relevant posts on your site.

As an example, let’s say that 2 weeks ago you wrote a blog post with the keyword “best keyword ever”. And this week you’re writing a blog post with the title “How to Find Keywords for Blogging”. As you’re writing this blog, you find a way to work the phrase “best keyword ever” naturally into it. You would then hyperlink “best keyword ever” to the blog you wrote 2 weeks ago.

Internal links provide 2 primary benefits. First, they help visitors naturally visit more pages on your site. They also help search engines better understand your site’s structure, which improves your SEO.

If you’re just beginning to blog on your website, you’ll want to incorporate an external link from a more authoritative website into each blog post.

An external link is a link from a page or post on your website to a page or post on another website. External links help you to build your site’s authority by showing your knowledge that the other website is the primary authority.

And, in case you’re wondering, you can choose whatever text you’d like for the hyperlink of an external link.

Now that we’ve covered internal and external links, here’s a tip that most won’t tell you about.

After publishing a new blog post, submit the link to Google Search Console. This will help Google index your content faster and improve its chances of appearing in search results more quickly.

Even with the previous tip, just because you’ve posted a blog to your site, doesn’t mean you’ll suddenly have tons of visitors flocking to your site to read it. You need to help spread the word as you’re building the effectiveness of your SEO content strategy. The easiest way to do this is by sharing your blog posts on your social channels. And of course, you’ll want to use the appropriate hashtags to reach a broader audience.

You’ll find more information about the ideal symbiotic relationship between your website and social channels in 5 Compelling Reasons You Need a Website and Not Just Social Media.

Finally, you don’t want to do all this work without keeping track of your progress. Because SEO is a slow burn, I recommend looking at your KPIs (key performance indicators) monthly. You can use Google Analytics (GA) to track things like traffic, engagement, and keyword rankings.

Although, I don’t think GA tells the whole story. I like to use SEMrush too. It helps me quickly get a gauge on the number of keywords associated with each blog. This info helps me decide which blogs would benefit from optimization for another keyword.

In other words, monitoring will help you to thoughtfully adjust your content strategy to better meet your SEO goals.

Remember, creating an effective SEO content strategy starts with a solid foundation of an overall SEO strategy. By combining this foundation with the framework and tactical steps above, you have the tools to dramatically improve your website’s visibility.

Need a little (or maybe a lot) of help creating your content strategy? We’d love to help! Schedule a conversation with me today.

In the fast-paced world of digital marketing, understanding where your website traffic comes from can make a significant difference in how you strategize for growth. As a small business owner, you need to understand the difference between direct and organic traffic to effectively optimize your online efforts.

Direct traffic involves visitors arriving at your site by typing your URL directly into their browser or through bookmarked links. Organic traffic is those visitors who land on your website as a result of unpaid search results, like those from Google or Bing. Each type has its unique advantages and challenges. Knowing which type of traffic to focus on can help you allocate your resources efficiently, enhancing your marketing strategy and boosting your business growth.

Direct Traffic Fundamentals

I usually explain direct traffic as being from people who already know about your business. They know your URL or have it bookmarked. So, direct traffic is often seen as an indication of your networking efforts, brand strength, and customer loyalty.

Direct traffic is especially valuable when you’re launching new products/services or promoting time-sensitive campaigns where immediate and easy access to your website is beneficial.

Unfortunately, accurately measuring direct traffic can be challenging. It often becomes a catch-all category in analytics for any traffic whose source cannot be automatically identified. So, you want to enhance the accuracy of how direct traffic is tracked and interpreted using tools like Google Analytics.

It may sound intimidating to think about how to use traffic analytics tools, but it’s worth it. Because the better the data, the better decisions you can make about how your offline marketing efforts are working.

Organic Traffic Fundamentals

Organic traffic is my favorite. It’s a measure of how many people stumble upon your website when they’re using a search engine like Google or Bing. Organic traffic is made up of people who are actively searching for what you offer. So, this traffic is highly targeted and valuable for growing your business.

The primary benefit of organic traffic is its sustainability and cost-effectiveness. Unlike paid advertising, where traffic stops as soon as you halt the campaign, organic traffic can continue to bring visitors to your site over time without ongoing costs.

To get the benefit of organic traffic, you need to invest in Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and consistently create new content for your website. Let me break this down just a little more.

SEO involves optimizing your site’s content, structure, and on-page elements like metadata and images, ensuring your site meets the criteria search engines use to rank pages.

Content includes things like blog posts, white papers, podcasts, and videos. It’s anything you add to your website to provide information your ideal client would find valuable.

Another significant benefit of organic traffic is the trust and credibility it builds with potential clients. People tend to trust organic search results more than advertisements because they see these results as more authentic and reliable. Ranking high in the list of links that Google or Bing show (called search engine results pages) often correlates with high-quality content and a reputable site, which enhances your business’s reputation.

Finally, organic traffic offers excellent ROI. While SEO requires upfront effort and resources, the long-term gains in visibility, customer engagement, and conversions can far outweigh the initial costs. Organic traffic also tends to have higher conversion rates than other traffic sources because users finding your site through search have a specific intent, which is more likely to lead to a transaction or engagement.

Direct vs Organic Traffic

When it comes to optimizing traffic for business growth, you need to understand the unique impacts of direct and organic traffic. Each type serves different strategic purposes and offers distinct advantages and potential drawbacks.

Direct Traffic: Strengths and Challenges

Direct traffic is valuable because it indicates strong brand awareness and customer loyalty. Visitors coming directly to your site are likely returning customers or have received your web address from a trusted source. This type of traffic is particularly beneficial for special promotions or new product launches, as these users are already familiar with your brand and can easily navigate to your site without needing to search for you.

However, there are challenges with direct traffic, primarily its scalability and consistency. Since direct traffic depends significantly on brand recognition and customer recall, it can be unpredictable and difficult to increase systematically without substantial branding, networking, or repeat customer engagement strategies.

Organic Traffic: Advantages and Limitations

Organic traffic can offer more stability and growth potential over the long term. This traffic comes from users actively searching for your services or products, indicating a pre-existing interest or need, which can lead to higher engagement and conversion rates. Organic traffic also enhances credibility, as users often trust organic search results more than paid advertisements.

The main limitation of relying solely on organic traffic is its vulnerability to search engine algorithm changes which happen frequently. SEO strategies must constantly evolve to keep up with the latest guidelines and ranking factors, requiring ongoing attention and adaptation. However, if you stick with the basics of always creating quality content, you’ll be less susceptible to problems when the search engines update their algorithms.

Balancing Direct and Organic Traffic

For most businesses, a healthy balance between direct and organic traffic is ideal. Leveraging the immediate benefits of direct traffic while building a robust organic presence can help ensure both short-term gains and long-term growth. This approach will allow you to capitalize on the brand loyalty of repeat visitors while continuously attracting new leads through search visibility.

By understanding the roles and results of both traffic types, you can tailor your digital marketing strategies to better meet your specific needs and goals, enhancing the effectiveness of your marketing, and achieving business growth.

4 Actions Steps to Strategically Balance Direct and Organic Traffic

Achieving a strategic balance between direct and organic traffic is crucial for small businesses aiming to optimize their overall web traffic and enhance growth. Here are practical steps to help you effectively manage and balance these two key traffic sources:

Use Analytics Tools
You’ve got to understand where your traffic is coming from to know how you’re doing. Tools like Google Analytics provide insights into the behaviors and origins of your visitors.

I recommend you analyze your traffic data at least once a month. It will help you identify which of your marketing efforts are most effective and where adjustments may be needed. This data-driven approach ensures you’re not just attracting traffic, but the right kind of traffic that aligns with your business goals.

Refine Your Marketing Strategies
For direct traffic, focus on brand reinforcement activities. This can include handing out business cards at a networking event or swag at a conference, traditional advertising, direct email campaigns, and customer loyalty programs. The purpose of these initiatives is to keep your brand top-of-mind and encourage repeat visits.

For organic traffic, there’s no way around it. You need to invest in SEO and content marketing. When you regularly update your website with fresh, relevant content that targets the keywords your potential customers are searching for, they’ll find you. This helps improve your search engine rankings and positions your brand as an authority in your field.

Create a Robust Online Presence
Your online presence extends far beyond your website. It encompasses social media, directories, and review sites. You’ll want to make sure your brand is consistently represented across all platforms you choose to be on. Social media is a great place to engage directly with your audience. It’s important for you to respond to all reviews (yup, the good and the bad) to build trust. And, please, keep your directory listings up to date to improve both direct and organic discovery.

Monitor and Adapt to Changes
The web is constantly evolving. Your marketing strategies need to evolve too. So, keep an eye on industry trends, algorithm updates, and new marketing techniques. By pivoting your strategies based on what the data tells you about your traffic’s performance and the changing preferences of your audience, you’ll continue getting both the direct and organic traffic you need to build your business.

By integrating these strategies, businesses of all sizes can cultivate a traffic mix that supports their immediate needs and long-term objectives, leading to more sustainable business growth.

As a health or wellness professional with big dreams for your practice, you already know the power of the digital world. You’re no stranger to terms like Search Engine Optimization (SEO) – a magic key that can open doors to better visibility on search engine giants like Google. But have you heard about Local SEO? And faced with SEO vs Local SEO, do you know which one is the golden ticket for your practice’s growth?

Well, it’s not as simple as picking one over the other. The practice of SEO is a spectrum, from broad, national efforts to strategies targeting your local corner of the world. Each has its place, its perks, and its role in ushering potential clients toward your business.

Don’t worry, we’re going to make this as easy for you as possible. We’ll look at what each brings to the table and how to choose the right approach for your practice. Whether your aim is to welcome more local clients into your brick-and-mortar location or reach out to a broader audience, we’ve got you covered.

The Power of SEO

Search Engine Optimization, or SEO as it is popularly known, is more than just a buzzword. It’s an intricate process designed to elevate your online visibility on search engine results pages (SERPs), thus driving more organic traffic to your website.

SEO is all about communicating with search engines in their language. It involves optimizing your website with specific keywords derived from rigorous keyword research. This enables search engines to understand your site’s content better and deem it relevant for individuals searching for those keywords.

Pause for a moment to think about the potential impact…

More visibility in organic search results translates to more visitors to your website. And more visitors mean a higher probability of converting these digital window shoppers into actual clients.

However, SEO isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. Its effects are far-reaching, and it primarily targets a national or even international audience. This makes it a powerful tool for businesses aiming to expand their reach beyond their geographical boundaries.

Imagine standing on a virtual stage, speaking to an international audience, and making a lasting impact. That’s the power of well-implemented SEO. But is this broad reach what your practice needs, or could the key to growth be a little closer to home?

Local SEO: Focusing Closer to Home

While SEO opens the gates to a global audience, Local SEO brings the focus closer to home. Think of it as a spotlight, focusing its beam on a specific stage – your local community.

Local SEO strategies prioritize promoting your services to local customers in real time. It’s all about ensuring that when someone in your area is looking for the health and wellness services you offer, your practice is top of mind, appearing prominently in local search results.

You can do this by optimizing your online presence to attract more traffic from relevant local searches on Google and other search engines. From ensuring your business listings are accurate and up-to-date, to optimizing your website and content with location-specific keywords and phrases, local SEO uses digital marketing to target a very specific place.

Imagine the convenience for a potential client who searches for a service you provide, and there you are, at the top of the local search result, complete with reviews, business hours, and even a phone number to make an appointment. Local SEO transforms your online presence into a beacon for your local business.

But does this mean local SEO is the superior choice? Not necessarily. It’s about aligning your SEO efforts with your business goals. So, let’s look at the critical factors to consider when deciding between SEO and Local SEO for your practice.

SEO vs Local SEO: Making the Right Choice for Your Practice

Understanding the distinction between SEO and local SEO is only half the battle. The key lies in knowing when to use each approach in your digital marketing strategy. So, how do you make this decision? It all boils down to your practice’s specific goals.

Broaden Your Reach with SEO

If your practice offers services that help clients beyond your geographical location, then a broader SEO strategy may be the way to go. Perhaps you offer telehealth services, online wellness coaching, or other digital products that remove the boundaries of a physical location. In this case, SEO can help you reach a national or even global audience, maximizing your potential client base.

Stay Local with Local SEO

On the other hand, if your practice is a brick-and-mortar location primarily serving clients in a specific region, local SEO strategies should be your focus. This approach is especially beneficial for practices offering in-person services. Local SEO will make sure your practice shows up in relevant local searches, making it easier for people in your community to find and access your services.

Why Not Both?

Remember, SEO and local SEO aren’t mutually exclusive. It’s all about understanding where your clients are and how best to reach them. In many cases, a hybrid approach can bring the best of both worlds, optimizing your online presence for both local and broader search engine rankings.

As you can see, it’s essential to align your SEO strategy with your business growth goals. Whether you want to reach out to the world or focus on your local community, SEO is an important part of taking your practice to the next level. When you find the right balance between SEO and local SEO for your practice, it will thrive.

Actionable Steps Towards SEO Success

If you’re ready to take the leap into the world of SEO, we’ve got some actionable steps to set you on the right path.

Perform an SEO Audit

The first step to improving your SEO strategy is knowing where you stand. Conduct an SEO audit to evaluate your current search engine performance. This audit should review several key areas, including your keyword usage along with your website’s mobile-friendliness, page load speed, and backlink quality. This will give you a solid base to improve upon and help identify areas of weakness in your current strategy.

Update Your Business Profiles

Ensuring that your business profiles on Google, social media, and industry directories are accurate and consistent is a small step that can have an enormous impact. Regularly review and update these listings with your current address, contact details, operating hours, and any other relevant information. This is an easy way to boost your local SEO efforts.

Create High-Quality, SEO-Friendly Content

Creating engaging, valuable content for your audience should be a cornerstone of your SEO strategy. This means incorporating relevant keywords naturally into your content, but also ensuring that this content is informative and useful to your readers.

(Want to know more about content marketing and SEO? Read more here.)

Commit to Consistency

Neither SEO nor local SEO are one-and-done marketing tactics. If you want to achieve and maintain high search engine rankings, you need to be consistent in your efforts. Regularly update your website and blog with fresh, SEO-friendly content. Monitor your keywords and adapt as necessary. Keep up with the latest SEO best practices and trends.

Your SEO Strategy

As you undertake this journey, remember that SEO isn’t an overnight success. It requires patience, consistency, and the right strategy. But the results can be transformative for your practice, helping you significantly grow your practice.

The truth is the digital world can feel like a maze at times. However, with the right strategies, you can navigate it successfully to grow your practice. As a health and wellness professional, understanding the difference between SEO and local SEO, and how each can benefit your practice, is a crucial step in that journey.

Remember, the choice between SEO and local SEO isn’t actually a competition. It’s really about creating a balance that aligns with your business goals. Want to shine your beacon for a global audience? Embrace the power of SEO. Prefer to become a well-known name in your local community? Local SEO has your back. Better yet, consider a hybrid approach that draws on the benefits of both.

As you step into the world of SEO, you’re not alone. We’re here to guide and support you.
Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, is much more than just a buzzword; it’s a key driver for attracting online traffic to your business. And it’s particularly crucial for health and wellness professionals because it directly impacts your visibility among potential clients.

But knowing when to invest in SEO can be a challenge to figure out. Determining the best time for you to invest in it depends on various factors such as the stage of your business, your specific objectives, and your budget.

Why is SEO crucial for health and wellness businesses?

Before diving into the timing of SEO investment, let’s explore its importance. Health and wellness services are often searched for locally. Whether someone is seeking a new chiropractor, yoga studio, or dietitian, their search typically begins online. SEO helps your business appear in these searches which means the people who are looking for your services can find you. And the more of the right people who find your website, the better the chances are that your business will grow.

1) The Stage of Your Business

Businesses pass through several stages, from their inception and growth phase to expansion and, eventually, maturity. Each of these stages will dictate a unique approach to SEO.

Startup
In the startup phase, SEO is an effective tool for building a solid online foundation. Despite being a new entrant with limited visibility, implementing basic SEO strategies can help attract potential customers and get your name out there.

SEO is how I built my first successful entrepreneurial endeavor, a coaching practice. (You can read more about the project that inspired KJ Content Marketing here.)

Growth and Expansion
As your business grows and expands, your SEO strategies should scale with it. This stage requires a more complex SEO strategy, aiming to increase your online reach and attract a wider audience.

Maturity
Mature businesses that have overlooked the significance of SEO might witness their online visibility stagnating or declining over time. If that sounds familiar, it’s time to start investing in SEO to boost your online presence and rejuvenate customer acquisition.

2) Your Goal for Implementing SEO

Every business has unique objectives when approaching SEO which can be related to the stage your business is in. Whatever your goals are, they should shape your SEO investment.

If you’re not quite sure what SEO can do for you, here are some common targets our clients ask us to help them achieve:

Google Maps Listing
Google Maps is a commonly used tool for finding local businesses. If appearing in these searches is your goal, investing in local SEO—strategies specifically designed to improve local online visibility—should be a priority.

Keep Up with Your Competitors
If your competitors outperform you in search results, it’s time to level the playing field. An effective SEO strategy can help improve your search rankings. When you appear higher in search, you automatically increase your visibility with potential clients.

Rank for Your Business Name
When you do a search for your business name, are you in the top spot? If not, this is a big deal—unless you just created your website today. You need to prioritize SEO interventions to improve your site’s visibility.

Get More Qualified Leads from Your Site
A ‘qualified lead’ is a potential client who is more likely to use your services. If your website isn’t attracting these leads, SEO can help optimize your site’s content and design to better capture this audience.

Decrease Ad Spend
While paid ads can drive traffic to your site, they can quickly become expensive. SEO, on the other hand, helps attract organic (non-paid) traffic, offering a more cost-effective strategy in the long run.

3) Your Budget

Though crucial, SEO is an investment that requires budget allocation. Don’t be discouraged if your funds are limited. Even a small investment in SEO can yield notable results over time.

For larger businesses with a more flexible budget, a comprehensive SEO investment can yield notable improvements in online visibility and customer acquisition.

4) Pulling It All Together

Determining on the best time to invest in SEO isn’t a matter of picking a date on the calendar. Instead, it’s a strategic decision based on your unique business, goals, and budget.

You’ll also want to keep in mind that SEO isn’t a set-and-forget endeavor. It’s an ongoing process that requires regular attention to keep your business relevant and competitive online. Consistently investing in SEO, irrespective of your business stage, can maintain your online visibility and grow your customer base.

So, the ideal time to invest in SEO is when you have clearly defined goals, a specified budget, and a keen desire to propel your business’s growth organically. Once these factors fall into place, it might just be the perfect moment to take the SEO plunge.

Need help evaluating when’s the right time for you to invest in SEO? Schedule a time to chat with one of our SEO experts.

If you’ve got a website or blog for your practice, you probably already know that search engine optimization (SEO) is crucial for attracting traffic and getting found online. If you’re like most of the health and wellness professionals we work with, you’d probably prefer to be working with your clients or patients instead of keeping up with the latest trends and strategies to improve your search rankings. And that’s where these 10 easy SEO tips and tricks come in.

These tips and tricks are designed to help you optimize your content and improve your search rankings without requiring extensive technical expertise or a lot of time.

1. Revisit old, underperforming content

If you’ve had a website for a while, you’ve probably got a lot of content on it. But just because you’ve got content, that doesn’t mean it’s all providing value to your ideal clients. So, you need to periodically perform an audit of your website’s content.

A content audit means you examine each page and post of your website to determine its relevance and usefulness to your audience. You’ll find some content is fine just as it is. Yet, you’ll also find others that need to be deleted or updated or even combined with other stronger pieces.

When you take the time to improve the quality of your website’s content, you can improve your site’s overall quality and relevance which can boost your search rankings. This is because Google prefers sites that have up-to-date and high-quality content.

2. Refurbish your existing posts

One of my favorite SEO tips and tricks for gaining traction with existing content is to reoptimize content for other keywords after you see the keywords Google associates with the post.

For example, let’s say you wrote a blog post about “Why Medical Advisory Boards Need to Change with the Times” which has the keyword “medical advisory boards”. A month after you posted the article, you check how it’s performing in SEMRush or another tool and see that you’ve got traction for the keyword “physician insights” and that’s a great keyword for your website.

What you would do then is optimize the blog post for the keyword “physician insights” too. So, you’d see if you could add “physician insights” into the meta description and use it appropriately throughout the blog post. When you do this, you signal to Google that your post deserves to climb in SERP ranking.

You can also use the next tip to help reinforce the additional keyword when you refurbish a post.

3. Avoid orphaned content

A piece of content is considered to be an orphan when there are no internal links to it. Internal linking is the practice of linking to other pages or posts on your website. It’s a powerful strategy that can improve your site’s structure, user experience, and search rankings. Internal links can help search engines understand the hierarchy and context of your content, as well as guide your visitors to other relevant pages on your site.

It’s also a great practice to use the keyword of the post you’re linking to as the anchor text for your internal link.

For example, if you have a blog post about “10 Easy SEO Tips and Tricks,” you can link to other related posts on your site, such as “5 Common SEO Mistakes to Avoid” or “How to Optimize Your Website for Local Search.”

4. Be mobile conscious

Google prioritizes the mobile experience when it considers what to display on its results pages. So you’ll want to make sure that when someone views your website on their phone, that it’s easy to use.

Some things to consider are:

ease of navigation

remove pop-ups or other annoying interstitials

short paragraphs

fast load times

And if you’d like to geek out more with this particular SEO tip, here’s Google’s explanation of how to be more mobile-conscious when it comes to your website.

5. Disassociate from spammy backlinks

Backlinks are one of the essential factors for determining your site’s authority and credibility. However, not all backlinks are created equal. Spammy or low-quality backlinks can hurt your search rankings and even result in a penalty from Google. Disavowing these backlinks is the best way to avoid negative consequences.

You can use Google’s Disavow Links tool to tell Google which links you want to disavow. Be careful not to disavow high-quality backlinks that are helping your search rankings. For more specifics on when and how to disavow backlinks, you’ll want to check out this information from Google.

6. Use external links

If you do any kind of research, this SEO tip and trick will be almost a no-brainer to implement.

One of the easiest ways to build your website’s authority is to link to other sites that are authoritative and have high-quality content. However, it’s important not to undermine your website’s authority by having too many external links. Here’s a simple rule of thumb: use 2-4 external links per 1000 words.

And, you don’t want to use just any other site to try to build authority, you’ll want to make sure each and every external link you use is relevant to the topic of your post and comes from an authoritative source.

For example, if you’re writing a blog post about the benefits of yoga, it would make sense to include a link to a study or article about the health benefits of yoga from a reputable source like Harvard Health Publishing or the National Institutes of Health.

7. Build backlinks by being a podcast guest

Backlinks are another one of my recommended SEO tips and tricks. And being a podcast guest can be a really simple and effective way to build them. When you’re interviewed on a podcast, you can include a link to your website in the show notes or bio. This can help drive traffic to your site and improve your search engine rankings.

Here are a couple of ideas for finding relevant podcasts to be a guest on. First, search for podcasts in your niche or industry. Second, search for podcasts one of your competitors has been on.

Regardless of how you create your podcast list, when you reach out to the hosts, make sure to have a clear value proposition and a few topics you can talk about so they’ll want to have you on their show.

8. Consistently create content

As I’ve said before, content marketing and SEO are incredible together. This is true because creating high-quality, valuable content on a consistent basis is crucial for SEO. All the search engines, not just Google, favor websites that publish fresh, relevant content regularly. So, by consistently creating content, you can establish yourself as a thought leader in your industry and build a loyal audience.

When creating content, make sure to use keywords naturally and in a way that enhances the readability of your post. Remember, you’re writing for the readers, not for the web crawlers. So, don’t stuff your content with keywords. And for goodness sake, aim to provide value to your readers with every post. Oh! Don’t forget to promote your content on social media and other relevant platforms to reach a wider audience (and maybe get a backlink or two).

9. Use keywords appropriately

Implementing any kind of SEO strategy requires keywords. You’ve got to pepper the right keywords throughout your content. But you need to use them appropriately because keyword stuffing or using too many keywords can really hurt your rankings.

To use keywords appropriately, research and identify the relevant keywords for your topic and use them naturally in your content. Use keywords in your title, meta description, and throughout the body of your content. Use variations of your keyword to make your content more readable and engaging. Remember, you’re writing for the readers, not the web crawlers. (I know I said this before, but it bears repeating.)

10. Write for your reader first

Yup, it bears so much repeating that I’m including it here as the final SEO tip and trick.

The most important thing to remember when optimizing your content for SEO is to write for your reader first and search engines second. Your content must provide value to your readers and help them solve a problem or answer a question.

By focusing on creating high-quality, valuable content that resonates with your audience, you’ll naturally incorporate other relevant keywords. Don’t try to game the system by stuffing your content with keywords or using other shady tactics. Instead, focus on creating engaging, informative, and helpful content for your readers.

Look, at the end of the day, I truly know that optimizing your content for SEO doesn’t have to be complicated. Sure, there’s a learning curve, but by focusing on this last tip first, you’ll know when you’re ready to start implementing the other tips and tricks to drive more traffic to your website. And when you do, you’ll be able to establish your website as an authoritative source in your industry and attract more organic traffic to your site.

SEO is all about getting people to find your content when they ask Google to find something that relates to your products or services. Or in even more geeky terms, the primary goal of any SEO inbound marketing strategy is to have the search engines serve up your content in the top results of the SERPs. Yeah, it’s quite the jargon-filled mouthful.

Over the years, I’ve talked with a lot of clients who worked with other SEO and content marketers before finding us. And the stories they tell about how ineffective their efforts at SEO inbound marketing were are really disheartening.

Yet, I can completely relate to their experiences. When I first started playing with SEO I had no idea what I was doing either. And I want to make sure you can learn from my mistakes instead of making them yourself or letting someone you hire make them.

Here are the 5 most common mistakes people make with their SEO inbound marketing strategies:

Guessing what keyword to use
This is by far the mistake made most frequently by SEO novices. (And unfortunately, even by some who call themselves SEO inbound marketing experts.)

The problem with guessing what keyword to use is that you’re an expert in what you do – the products and services you offer. You talk about your expertise using different words than your clients do. (If you reread the first paragraph of this post, you’ll see examples of using jargon and plain language to describe the same thing.)

My clients are always surprised by the keywords their ideal clients actually use to Google their services and products. I was too when I first started doing keyword research. I thought I was a weird Googler instead of recognizing that I had expertise my ideal clients didn’t!

Not sticking to the topic
When you select a keyword to use for your website or blog post or video or whatever it is that you’re creating, you want to make sure you stick to the topic for the entire creation process. Too many content creators start off with good intentions and want to provide a lot of value, but they wind up down a rabbit hole instead of giving their content consumers what they promised in the title or headline of the piece.

There are a few ways to address this. First, you can create an outline that helps you to stick to the topic. Second, you can do a final edit of your finished product at least 24 hours after it’s “done”. Finally, you can ask someone else to do a final edit for you.

Hitting publish before you polish
Search engines are getting smarter all the time. They can tell if an article is written with AI. They can also tell if the content you’re publishing is high-quality or not. (BTW, high-quality content doesn’t mean it’s perfect in every way.)

High-quality content means you’ve done your due diligence to provide accurate and timely information for your ideal clients. When you take the time to polish your content, you’re more likely to gain traction with your SEO inbound marketing strategy.

No links
There are two types of links you want to include in the content on your website. The first is an external link. The second is an internal link.

When you’re trying to get SEO traction for a new website or channel, you must establish yourself as an expert. That’s where external links come in. An external link is a link to another more well-known website in the marketplace.

For example, if you’re opening a new chiropractic office, you may want to include a link to your local state chiropractic licensing board on your website. Or if you’re a massage therapist, you may want to include links to the Mayo Clinic’s blog post on the benefits of massage.

An internal link is a link to another page on your website. For example, here’s an internal link to a blog on my website about engaging the right visitors to your website.

(If you clicked that internal link, you’ll notice that it opened in another tab. I like to do that to help people find their way back to the original content.)

Ignoring user experience
Have you ever visited a website that was just ugly? What about one that was too difficult to read? And worst of all one that took too long to load?

These are all examples of bad user experiences. Successful SEO inbound marketing depends upon a good user experience because it’s another one of the things that Google considers.

If your website is ugly, outdated, or difficult to read, people aren’t going to stay very long on your site. This will drive down your average session duration which is one of the factors Google looks at to evaluate user experience. To resolve these issues, you may want to update your website’s template or hire a website designer.

If your website is slow to load, the problem could be with the hosting or with the site itself. Google’s PageSpeed Insights tool can give you a quick technical overview of where the problem may be.

There’s a lot to consider when implementing SEO inbound marketing strategies. So, it’s easy to make mistakes. By keeping in mind these most common issues, you’ll be better able to avoid them and improve your marketing results.

If you’re ready to learn more about how your SEO stacks up to your competition, here’s a free SEO competitor analysis.

Are you looking for ways to improve your marketing to grow your business? If so, implementing a combination of content marketing and SEO could be exactly what you need. These techniques can help you reach new customers, improve your brand visibility, and increase your sales.

Because some marketers use the terms content marketing and SEO almost interchangeably, let’s set the stage with some definitions. These definitions will also make the discussion about using the techniques together simpler.

What is Content Marketing?

Content marketing is a strategic marketing approach that involves creating and distributing valuable, relevant, and consistent content to attract and retain a clearly defined audience which is hopefully comprised of a bunch of your ideal clients. The ultimate goal of content marketing is to drive purchases of your products and services and/or establish you as a thought leader in your industry.

The content you need to create can take many forms. Some to consider include blog posts, videos, social media posts, and e-books. Whatever you choose to create, it should be informative, engaging, and offer value to your audience.

Why is Content Marketing Important?

We’re bombarded by ads and promotional messages everywhere we look. According to Siteefy, at the beginning of 2022, the average person saw about 10,000 ads per day! (And this was double what the average person was exposed to in 2007.) My guess is the numbers are even higher today. So, it probably doesn’t come as a surprise that traditional marketing techniques are losing their effectiveness.

Content marketing is a softer sell than traditional marketing. It doesn’t clammer for attention as ads do. Instead, it offers answers to questions and advice. It’s more subtle.

And when done well, content marketing allows you to connect with your market on a deeper level. By establishing trust and credibility through the valuable information you provide, your target market will be more likely to engage with you. This can lead to increased sales, brand loyalty, and improved customer retention.

How to Implement Content Marketing?

Although there’s a lot to implementing a content marketing campaign, here are the basic steps:

Define your target audience/market
Before creating any content, you need to understand your target audience. Who are they? What are their interests? What problems do they have that you can solve? Once you know your audience, you can create content that speaks directly to them.

Choose the right channels
There are many channels you can use to distribute your content. Your choice of channel(s) will depend on your target audience and the type of content you create. Some popular channels include social media, email marketing, blogs, videos, and podcasts.

Create valuable content
The content you create needs to be valuable and relevant to your target audience. It should offer solutions to their problems, answer their questions, or entertain them. Note that I didn’t say your content should be a bunch of sales pitches because this shifts to focus from your target audience to you. This can be a difficult messaging shift for many businesses to make.

And when you’re creating content, you want to make sure people will want to pay attention to it. Try using storytelling, humor, and other creative techniques to engage your audience.

Consistency is key
Consistency is crucial in content marketing. You need to create and distribute content at regular intervals on the specific channels you’ve chosen. By being predictable, you establish trust with your audience. One way you set yourself up for success with consistently publishing content is to create a content calendar.

Now let’s shift focus to SEO.

What is SEO or Search Engine Optimization?

SEO is the practice of optimizing your website and content so it appears toward the top of search pages. Ideally, you want it to appear right under the ads so people can more easily find your business when they’re searching for information related to your industry, products, or services.

You’ll often hear people explain it with a bit more jargon. Something more along the lines of ranking higher in search engine results pages (SERPs), but it means the same thing.

Why is SEO Important?

SEO can help attract highly targeted traffic to your website. When someone’s searching for something related to your business, they’re often highly motivated to take action. And that action can be anything from making a purchase, signing up for your email list, or filling out a contact form.

SEO can also help you establish your business as a credible authority.

How to Optimize Your Website and Content for SEO?

Again, there’s a lot more to it than I can cover here, but these are the basics:

Conduct keyword research
Before you can start optimizing your content, you need to know what keywords and phrases your target audience is searching for. Use a keyword research tool like SEMrush, Ahrefs, or Majestic to identify relevant keywords and incorporate them into your content.

Optimize your website structure and function
Make sure your website is organized in a logical, easy-to-navigate way. Use descriptive page titles and meta descriptions to give search engines a clear idea of what each page is about.

And for goodness sake, make sure your site functions well on a mobile device. These days most people search on their phones. That’s not true for every industry, but it’s true enough that Google will penalize sites that don’t work well on mobile.

Create high-quality, optimized content
When creating content, make sure it’s high-quality, informative, and optimized for your target keywords. Use header tags, meta descriptions, and other on-page SEO elements to help search engines understand what your content is about.

You probably noticed that implementing SEO and implementing content marketing share a common step: creating high-quality content. This is why many people will talk about the two distinct marketing approaches interchangeably. And it’s this commonality that makes the combination of the two approaches incredibly effective.

How Can You Use Content Marketing and SEO Together to Maximize Your Marketing Efforts?

Here are a few powerful ways to maximize your marketing efforts:

Use content to target specific keywords
One of the most powerful ways to use content marketing and SEO together is to create content that targets specific keywords. By doing keyword research and identifying high-volume, relevant keywords related to your business, you can create content that’s optimized for those keywords, making it more likely that your content will rank higher in search engine results pages.

For example, let’s say you’re a therapist who specializes in working with couples. You might do keyword research and identify “couples therapist,” “marriage counselor,” and “couples counselor” as high-volume, relevant keywords. You could then create blog posts, social media content, and product or service descriptions that include those keywords, making it more likely that people searching for those terms will find your business.

Create content that’s optimized for featured snippets
Featured snippets are a special type of search result that appears at the top of Google’s search results pages, providing a quick answer to a user’s query. Featured snippets can be incredibly valuable for driving traffic to your website, as they often appear above traditional search results.

To optimize your content for featured snippets, focus on creating content that answers specific questions related to your business or industry. Use header tags (H1, H2, H3, etc.) to break up your content into digestible sections, and include bulleted or numbered lists when possible. By creating content that’s optimized for featured snippets, you’ll increase the likelihood that your content will be featured at the top of search results pages.

(In case you haven’t noticed yet, this post is a great example of one that’s been optimized for featured snippets.)

Create shareable content to build backlinks
Another way to use content marketing and SEO together is to create shareable content that other websites will want to link to. Backlinks, or links from other websites to your website, are an important factor in SEO. They signal to search engines that your website is authoritative and valuable.

To create shareable content, think about what types of content your target audience is likely to share. This could be informative blog posts, infographics, or even videos. Make sure your content is visually appealing, easy to understand, and provides real value to your target audience.

Once you’ve created your shareable content, reach out to other websites in your industry and ask them to link to it. You can also share your content on social media and other platforms to increase its visibility and encourage others to link to it.

Use content to build relationships with your audience
Finally, content marketing and SEO can be used together to build relationships with your target audience. By creating high-quality, informative content, you can establish your business as a thought leader in your industry and build trust with your audience.

To do this, focus on creating content that provides real value to your target audience. This could be in the form of blog posts, white papers, or even webinars. Make sure your content is informative, easy to understand, and provides real solutions to the challenges your target audience is facing.

Once you’ve created your content, share it on social media and other platforms to increase its visibility and encourage engagement. Respond to comments and questions from your audience to build relationships and establish your business as a trusted resource.

Content marketing and SEO are two powerful tools that can help you reach new customers, establish your brand as a thought leader, and grow your business. By using these tools together, you can create a powerful marketing strategy that will help you take your business to the next level.

Have you been feeling overwhelmed by the ever-changing world of SEO? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. However, if you want to stay ahead of the game and drive more traffic from the search engines to your website, you need to have a solid understanding of the basic SEO marketing skills so you can build on them.

And that’s the purpose of this post. I’m going to break down the five basic, yet extremely powerful SEO skills that every business needs to develop now. These are the building blocks of every successful SEO strategy. They are also the fundamental keys to every SEO engagement I have with clients. And they can be your keys to online marketing success as well.

Keyword Research

Every good SEO strategy begins with keyword research. And keyword research starts with a solid understanding of your ideal client profile (ICP). You have to know what your ideal clients are searching for when it comes to your products and services so you can find the right keywords.

The goal of keyword research is to find the sweet spot between high search volume and low competition. However, if your business serves a very niche market, it’s not always possible to find appropriate keywords with a high volume. And that’s OK. I’ve helped many niche businesses drive more traffic to their website with lower-volume keywords.

On-Page Optimization

Once you’ve found the keywords you want to use, you need to optimize your website’s content and structure. Optimization makes it easy for search engines to understand what your website’s about and how it’s organized. This SEO marketing skill is critical. If the search engines can’t quickly understand what your site’s about and how it’s organized, your SEO efforts will fail.

On-page optimization includes elements such as meta tags (title tags and meta descriptions), headings (H1, H2, H3, etc.), and internal linking. The goal is to make it easy for search engines to understand your website’s content and organization. The bonus is that by optimizing your website for on-page SEO, you’ll also be improving the user experience (UX).

If you have a WordPress website, Yoast is an easy-to-use tool to help you optimize each page of your site. If your website is on a different platform, you can use SEMrush to help you optimize the pages on your site.

Content Marketing

This is where things get creative. You must create content that’s valuable and relevant to your ideal clients. It’s the content that gets people to visit your website and establish your business as an authority.

The content you create could be blogs, case studies, infographics, videos, special reports, podcasts, and the list goes on and on. However, you also need to be smart about what you’re creating so you can repurpose it and streamline your content creation process.

Here’s a link to a free tool you can use to help you keep track of your content and how you can repurpose it.

Link Building

Backlinks are connections to your website from other websites. The more popular and authoritative the other websites are, the more popular and authoritative the search engines assume your website is.

What this also means is that not all backlinks are equal. So, you’ll want to focus on getting backlinks that are meaningful in your industry or to your ideal clients.

Although backlinks aren’t as critical to SEO marketing as they originally were, having the skills to build good ones is still important. And you can track your backlinks with tools like SEMrush, Ahrefs, and Majestic.

Technical SEO

This is the geeky stuff that most business owners assume their website already has. Technical SEO is making sure your website is working well behind the scenes. It’s easy to assume that if you’ve paid a bunch of money to have your website built that it will be up to snuff technically. However, that’s not always the case.

In all the SEO marketing work I’ve done, this is the one skill that repeatedly shows up as lacking for new clients. So, it’s usually the first thing I look at when I evaluate a new client’s website for SEO.

It’s easiest to think of technical SEO as being all about UX. You want your website to be fast, work well on mobile devices, and have structured data.

You can use tools like Google PageSpeed Insights and GTMetrix to analyze your website’s technical SEO so you can make improvements.

And there you have it, the five powerful SEO marketing skills every business needs to develop now. Remember, SEO is an ongoing process, so don’t be afraid to experiment and see what works for your business. And if you’re ever feeling stuck, don’t hesitate to reach out. I’d be glad to help.

Every business owner needs to stay up-to-date on the latest marketing tactics to ensure the success and growth of their company. One tactic that should definitely be on your radar is SEO (search engine optimization).

But what is SEO, and why is it so important? Simply put, SEO is the process of optimizing your website and its content to make it more attractive to search engines like Google. When your website ranks higher in search engine results, it becomes more visible to potential customers, leading to an increase in traffic and, ultimately, sales.

So, what are some key SEO marketing tactics that every business needs to know about?

#1 Conduct keyword research.

Keyword research is a crucial step in the process of search engine optimization (SEO). When you take the time to research and select the right keywords to target, you can improve your website’s visibility in search results. This improvement will result in more qualified traffic visiting your site.

So, how do you go about conducting keyword research?

Here are some tips to get you started:

Make a list of relevant terms and phrases.

Start by brainstorming a list of terms and phrases related to your business and the products or services you offer. These could be specific product names, industry-specific terms, or common terms that potential customers might use to search for your business.

Use keyword research tools.

There are several tools available that can help you find keywords. Tools you might want to consider include Ahrefs, SEMrush, and KWFinder. These tools can help you understand search volume, keyword difficulty, and search intent.

Although some people use Google Ads to do their keyword research because it’s free, I don’t recommend it. Unless you spend a significant amount on buying ads, it won’t give you the detailed information you can find in other tools. And without detailed information, you can inadvertently undermine your SEO efforts.

Consider search intent.

As previously mentioned, you need to consider the intent behind the search when someone types a keyword into Google or any search engine. Are people using this keyword to simply gather information or are they looking to make a purchase?

You’ll want to match the searcher’s intention for each keyword you select to your intention for the content you’re creating.

Do a competitive analysis.

Check out which keywords your competitors are targeting. Once you understand what they’re doing you may find opportunities to differentiate your business and target other keywords.

Organize and prioritize your keywords.

Once you’ve created a list of potential keywords, you’ll want to organize and prioritize them based on relevance and potential value to your business.

When I create keyword lists for my clients, I usually have thousands of them. And I organize them first by search volume. Then I can more easily determine which are best for the main pages on the website and which are better for blog posts based on a combination of search volume, keyword difficulty, and search intent.

When you create your list don’t feel that you need to immediately target all the keywords on your list. Focus first on the ones that will have the greatest impact and then put together a content plan to determine when you’ll use at least some of the remaining keywords.

Conducting keyword research can be a time-consuming process, but it’s completely worth the effort. By identifying the right keywords to target, you can improve your website’s visibility in search results and attract more qualified traffic to your site. And without this SEO marketing tactic, it’s unlikely that your site will have much success in attracting the right organic traffic.

#2 Optimize your website’s content.

Optimizing your website’s content is an essential SEO tactic. Once you’ve identified your target keywords, you want to incorporate them naturally into the content on your website. By making sure that your content is relevant, informative, and well-written, you can improve your website’s ranking in search results and attract more qualified traffic to your site.

But what exactly does it mean to optimize your website’s content?

Here are some tips to help you get started:

Use your target keywords strategically.

Once you’ve got your keywords organized, it’s much easier to identify the keywords you want to target. For each page and post on your website, you’ll want to choose one or two keywords to optimize for in your content.

The goal in optimizing your content is to incorporate the keyword or words you’ve selected naturally into your content. This includes using them in your headings, subheadings, and throughout the body of your text. Just be sure to avoid keyword stuffing, as this can actually hurt your SEO efforts.

Make your content easy to read.

In addition to being relevant and informative, your content should also be easy to read and understand for your ideal client/customer. Use clear and concise language, and break up your text with headings and subheadings to make it more scannable.

Use header tags.

Header tags (H1, H2, etc.) help structure your content and make it easier for search engines to understand the hierarchy of your text. Use them to break up your content into sections.

I’ve broken up this post with several header tags. They make the post easier to scan and create visual interest.

Include internal and external links.

Linking to other relevant pages on your website can help prevent orphaned pages and aid the web crawlers in finding long paths of content on your site. Linking to external sources associates your site with other sites. Adding both internal and external links can help improve the credibility and authority of your content.

In order to give your readers the best experience with the links you add, you’ll want to use descriptive anchor text. (Anchor text is the clickable text.)

Optimize images and videos.

It’s likely that your website includes images and maybe even videos. You’ll want to optimize these too by using descriptive file names and alt tags for images and transcripts for videos.

Don’t worry if this seems like too much to deal with. There are tools that can help you optimize your website’s content. For my clients that have WordPress websites, I typically recommend the plugin Yoast because it’s easy to use.

Optimizing your website is a critical tactic for SEO marketing. And by optimizing your website’s content, you can improve its visibility in search results and attract more qualified traffic to your site.

#3 Build high-quality backlinks.

Backlinks, or links from other websites to yours, are an important factor in SEO marketing – at least they were. Google has stated that backlinks won’t be as important as they once were. However, backlinks are still a ranking factor, so it’s good to know what they are and how to build them. You always want to take advantage of all the SEO marketing tactics you can.

But how do you go about building high-quality backlinks?

Here are some tips to get you started:

Create valuable, informative content.

The first step in earning backlinks is having content on your website that’s worth linking to. This means creating content that’s informative, well-written, and useful to your target audience.

Use social media to promote your content.

Once you’ve created your content, you’ll want to share it on social media to get it in front of a larger audience. This can help drive traffic to your site and, potentially, earn you backlinks.

Reach out to other websites and bloggers.

When you come across a blog or website you believe might be interested in linking to your content, reach out and ask. Just be sure to be polite and provide a specific reason why you think their readers would benefit from your content.

I get emails nearly every day from people who want to either post or purchase backlinks. What I find amazing is that so few of them take the time to even read the site they want to post on. So, they offer to post something that has nothing to do with the target audience of the site. And that’s the polite ones. It’s not unusual for me to receive notes that feel demanding about posting on a site. I’m sure you’ve already guessed that I immediately mark those emails as spam.

Participate in online communities.

Engaging with online communities in your industry, such as forums and discussion groups, can help build your reputation and potentially earn you backlinks. You’ll just want to be sure you’re adding value to the conversation and don’t seem spammy with links to your website.

Use your offline connections.

Your offline connections can be powerful too. If you have relationships with other businesses or organizations, consider asking them to link to your website.

As with any SEO marketing tactic, building high-quality backlinks takes time and effort, but it can be a valuable investment for your business.

#4 Make your website mobile-friendly.

This is the most critical SEO marketing tactic. Google uses mobile-friendliness as a key ranking factor in their search results. If your website isn’t optimized for mobile, it will undermine your search engine optimization (SEO) efforts.

But what exactly does it mean to have a mobile-friendly website, and how can you make sure that yours meets this standard?

Here are some tips to get you started:

Use a responsive design.

A responsive design means that your website automatically adjusts its layout to fit the screen of the device it’s being viewed on. This is important because it ensures your site is always easy to use regardless of the device someone is using.

Keep your website’s layout clean and simple.

Less is more when it comes to a mobile-friendly navigable site. Use large, easy-to-read fonts and plenty of white space to help break up content.

Make sure your website loads quickly.

No one wants to wait for a website to load, especially on a mobile device. Ensure your website loads quickly by hosting it on a fast server, optimizing your images, and minifying your code.

Make it easy for users to contact you.

Put your contact information in a prominent place. Make the forms on your site easy to use on a small screen.

Luckily, there are several different ways you can easily check the mobile-friendliness of your website. SEOSLY has compiled a nice list of them.

By following the tips above, you can ensure your website is mobile-friendly. This is critical not only for SEO but for a positive user experience on your site.

#5 Use social media to your advantage.

Use social media to share your content.

When you publish new content on your website, share it on your social media accounts. This will get your content in front of a larger audience which can help drive traffic to your website. And, as mentioned previously, it can potentially earn you backlinks which can improve your search rankings.

Optimize your social media profiles.

Make sure your social media profiles are completely filled out. Use relevant keywords and information about your business in your profile description. Doing this can help improve your visibility in search results and make it easier for potential customers to find you.

Connect with other businesses and influencers.

Building relationships with other businesses and influencers in your industry can help improve your credibility and authority. You can do this by engaging with their content – without being spammy. The upside for you in addition to becoming associated with them is that you might even earn backlinks. Which, of course, can boost your SEO.

Track your results.

As with any SEO marketing tactic, it’s important to track your results. Tools like Google Analytics provide data on the traffic to your website – including what portion of it comes from your social media accounts. Having this data can help you optimize your social media strategy.

Using social media as a part of your overall SEO strategy can drive more traffic to your website and improve your search rankings. Just be sure to stay up-to-date on the latest best practices and regularly assess and adjust your approach to ensure the best possible results for your business.

By implementing these SEO marketing tactics, you can give your business the online visibility it needs to succeed in today’s digital age. Stay up-to-date on the latest SEO best practices and regularly assess and adjust your strategy to ensure the best possible results for your business.
